Fuel Consumption

I'm just pondering an upgrade and would like feedback on real world fuel consumption for the following

340i
330i
330d

I'm not sold on xdrive so a 335d is out of the question.

I need to get my man math figures together before I put a proposal forward to the Mrs

Lmao.

430d, can get over 50 on a good run. Usually get just over 40 on the commute, never seen it below 36 so far.

Realise you asked about the 3, but shouldn't be much in it.

Thanks for the swift replies.

I'll be doing 10 - 12 k per year. I have a 20 mile commute to work which is a mix of A roads and couple of junctions up the M1.

Are you not planning on using the car for social stuff?

20 mile drive to work I think works out at 10k per year ish.

At 12,000 miles it will cost you around £300 extra to run a 340i over a 330d. £1,800 vs £1,500. So 340i all the way.

I work from home a fair bit and also use hire cars for work quite frequently so I guess that makes a few thousand. I'm closer to 12k tbh

Averaging 38 in my 330d which is quite impressive considering 75% of my journeys are sub 20 milers....

I think it will be more than that. If you realistically applied a 10mpg gap and say 340i at 25 mpg and 330d at 35 mpg over 12000 miles it would cost an extra £500 to £600 ish pa.

Probably still worth it for the 340i though, just depends how tight your budget is.

330i, 75mph on cruise control on a long run will do around 40mpg, on your commute of 20 miles I would say to expect around low 30's, maybe 32/33 mpg. Short trips around town high 20's, but obviously all depends how you drive it and how heavy your right foot is

So we're looking at £50 per month. The 330i seems to be around the same as my 320i give or take a couple of mpg, with the 330d slightly better.

Mmmmmm

12,000 divided by 30 (mpg) = 400 gallons.

400 X 4.54 = 1,816 (litres) is roughly £1,800 @ 99.9 pence per litre. Apologies for being £14.18 out.

Yes and apply your same calcs to the 40 mpg and you are coming out at a differential of £454, slightly nearer £500 than £300 differential I would say

I averaged 35 in my 330D, I'm averaging 26 in my 340i. I budgeted 10MPG difference and I'm doing slightly better than that. Definitely worth it for the engine!

That's the logic I used, I think if the 335d was RWD and didn't have the 'mincey exhaust pipe' I would have gone for that though

To be fair I always assume diesel to cost 5 or 6p per litre more, but yes it is closer to £400 than £300. Still not a lot for the silky smoothness of a 340i.
