Not sure about this-- I know each model is different, but my ex bought a used 2012 128i a couple months ago (300 miles on it, to replace her 2010 that was totalled) not realizing that it did NOT have the OEM alarm --after she discovered the lack of an alarm, she inquired about adding it and was told that they couldn't install the OEM alarm because it lacked the appropriate wiring harnesses.

Just took delivery of a 2013 328i Xdrive classic with navi and bmw assist, build in Germany for Canada. I don't have comfort access or alarm. No chirp when locking. There is a option for lights to flash.... But I don't notice the lights.
1) Can dealer now install OEM alarm? Will this give me chirp? 2) Is there a way to code the chirp? From my research so far I can't find. I find this strange because the "My BMW Remote" app for IPhone can send a chirp - beep request via bmw assist. |

Talked to dealer when I got car, he said that if the car doesn't come "wired" from plant for alarm, dealer can't add it.
This no chirp thing really bugged me at first too, until I realized honestly I don't really need it. I'm always looking at my car when I lock it, so I can see the lights flash to confirm everything's locked right. |

I added the OEM alarm to my E46, wasn't too difficult DIY but had to have the dealer code it for $50. This added the chirp and the alarm siren. I didn't option the alarm for my F30 and the only time I miss the chirp is when looking for the car at the theater parking lot. Alarm sirens are so common here that no one pays attention to them anyway.

I don't know if the F30 clown nose blinks by default or you have to have it programmed (I did in my E46s). But since nobody pays much attention to alarms blaring anyway, I thought the appearance of an alarm (blinking clown nose) was good enough and never bothered to buy the optional alarm.

The clown nose activation is just a "dummy" alarm. The blinking light makes it look like it's armed.

Alarm a $400 option? Eff you, BMW! What a joke... these packages and options are so incredibly inefficient. No wonder the cars are so expensive; we are paying for BMW's production inefficiencies. With most brands (including VW and Benz), there is an order of operations when it comes to options and packages; You don't get the super fancy features without first opting for the basics... this makes perfect sense.
My $50k 2013 328i sedan has EVERYTHING (Lighting, Premium, Driver Assistance, and Cold Weather packages in addition to HK sound, rear sunshades, and moonroof (I'm sure I'm missing a few options). Yet it isn't equipped with any lines (Sport, Luxury, M-Sport), so it looks basic on the outside and has the basic 17" 5-spoke wheels)... now it's missing a $400 factory alarm, something that comes standard on a Toyota Corolla, so my car doesn't "beep, chirp, quack, bark, or moo," as SHOPTB very humorously put it. Grrrrr! Still though, I love the car and I'm grateful to have it. At the end of the day it does what it's supposed to do exceptionally well: It drives like a dream.
