Mine has a black foam shaped piece on both sides, no noise.

To answer your question regarding the taping... It was just plain finicky hard work. I fed the length from above and worked it downards. Once the tape was roughly in place i removed the adhesive backing. The foam tape can somewhat hold its shape to allow the feed.

To position it accurately to the gap I alternated between opening the door fully and closing it ever so slightly to the first "feint" click to try and get my fat fingers to align the foam tape.

I just worked up the length of the tape.

it is rewarding to see this method works for others as well. Sometimes i wonder if i have achieved anything... Like i said... Once you remove some noise, you tend to focus n the residual remaining noises. I have already lost sight... I mean sound... Of the gains i made :-p

Well done mate!
I may try again with taping the door area, but if the previous posts regarding sound deadening material being available from BMW are true, I'll hold out for that!!

If you have trouble sourcing the firewall acoustic foam, here is a copy of my receipt. It comes 48" wide and you buy it by the linear foot. I bought one foot.

They have a web presence, but I couldn't find the specific stuff on the site. They have lots more selection in the store than what's available online.

Good Luck!

What model and year is your car?

I searched Real OEM for this insulation, but I could only find this. It may be part # 18, but there is no part #18 description or BMW part number listed on the site.

I'm going to be coding someones new car later today.

I'll see if he'll let me poke around and see if the insulation is there.

I wonder if there's something covering the strut hole now too.

Wow, mine is a April 2012 build too!

That's good news as it looks like it wasn't a model change for 2013.

Thanks!

If your dealer asks for picture proof, just let me know.

Now, as for me, the search to reduce the noise continues...

For those with the black foam, was your car made in germany or south africa?

Mine was from south africa.

None of the F30s in the dealer lot i inspected had this foam. However the F10s did.

Have you checked the door gaps at the rear of the doors? I think the shut needs to be really flush with the body panels.

Also shrouding the plastic wheelmarch may help?

I have oct 2012 build in Germany also missing the black insulation. If the wind is funneled though this opening wouldn't the door seals be enough to stop the wind coming into the cabin? I have wind noise at over 60mph as well as I hear cars passing by as if the windows are open.

The dealer realigned the front doors last week.
It's better, but still not enough to my liking.

Same here, my dealer says the mirror design is to blame... He says the same thing is happening to the new 5 and 7 series and the wind noise in the X5 is much worse than the 3-series.

The car (2013 N20 base line) didn't have the black foam. Just the big gaping gap. Darn!

Mine is April 2012 Munich build - no black foam.

I removed the tape I tried to apply on drivers side (except for bits at top & bottom areas) and stuffed 5/8 backing rod into the gap per Frogman's recommendation.
It's a bit quieter but I haven't done a lot of testing.

Sounds like I need to visit the dealer though to get the factory part.

I put some foam insulation in the fender gap. Noise is the same , it's coming somewhere from the windshield and the pillar.

Your dealer is B*llsh*ting, mine is very quiet, and only tyre noise on bad roads is heard.

I agree.

To the others, if the fender foam isnt working i suggest shrouding the wheel arch. Like i was saying i havent tried to scientifically prove which single mod did the most dampening. Miyht need to do all
