F30 320i Engine Problems?

As is well documented, the two litre petrol engines in the old E90 were, not to put too fine a point in it, rubbish - going into limp mode, cutting out, etc. Are the F30 petrols free of such issues? I was looking for a 320d but I'm finding it hard to source a car with the right spec and have found one I like but it's a 320i. Would I be mad to contemplate it?

Coming up for a year with mine, I don't do that many miles though hence no diesel.

I did test drive a 420d just to see what it was like, I preferred the petrol anyway.

No issues at at all with mine.

I have a 320i LCI with the B48 engine. This came out in July 2015. I have done almost 9000 miles from new and love it. I have had no problems and it has all the power and torque I need. After all it is a 2.0 litre turbo. Also averaged 38.8 mpg over that mileage.

Not sure what the old 320i engine is like (2012- mid 2015)

Thanks folks. The old 2 litre petrol was an absolute dog. There was a thread in the e90Post forum about a trillion pages long re the problems with the 318i/320i engine. I had a 318i and spent months trying to get it fixed before finally getting the Stealers to take it back and swap it for a 320d.

Had an 05 e90 for over 10 years, besides leaky gaskets, vac. Pump gasket leaks everything ran well. Last few years the shaft sensor and VVT motor went, expensive parts but diy'd it so learnt a lot!

Now got the N20, petrol as well-320i, seems fine, bit noisey on start. Recently read about US issues with timing chain but on older pre 15 cars, not sure if it applies to UK cars.

Cheers Smthie

No. I've had mine for 18 months now. Was an auc car when I bought it and it's never let me down yet. Yes I would have liked the 328i/335i at the time but couldn't stretch that far and mine has a great spec (everything I wanted)
Only thing I've had replaced is the low tone part of the horn. Picked up on end of warranty inspection.
The 320i is viewed as a poor mans Bmw by some on here but I couldn't be happier with it.

Had a 320i for a month, 62 plate bought privately for a lot less than a 320d. Impressed by how smooth and quiet it is and got decent performance (intending to get it remapped to 328i levels soon). Slightly noisy at startup (does make me wonder about the timing chain?) but very happy with the decision.

A quick note about my 2014 320i, at 49000 miles with full dealer service history the engine has just failed. ABSOLUTLY GUTTED
4 months out of warranty and it looks like it will need a new engine. Full diagnosis yet to be confirmed but the preliminary examination found the oil fliter full of bits of metal..... Will let you know what happens.

Sorry to hear this but as just mentioned you "may" be able get this done as goodwill gesture from BMW.

I have owned my 2012 320i since january, it can be a little noisy on a cold start and if you lift the bonnet the fuel injectors are very noisy but there all like that. i have also spotted some blue smoke when driving away after a cold start, i was advised this could be early signs of turbo oil seal wear but its not using any oil so i think i dont need a new turbo just yet. My f30 has covered 52000 miles so will be very interested to know why mghumphreys engine has died, Hope you get some goodwill from BMW mate.

Is there a retrofit how-to thread for that?

Thanks for the encouraging messages guys. The dealer is preparing a report to apply to BMW. Hopefully they are proud enough of their engineering to step up and help me out. I'll keep you updated. Already had to pay c.£900 for "investigation" so got a feeling this is going to get expensive pretty quickly. 😢
