Looks like steering rack and wheel hub changes starting 11/2012 production

Assuming RealOEM is correct, see here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...71&hg=32&fg=12

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=31&fg=10

Also steering column changed beginning 11/2012. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...76&hg=32&fg=30

For those of you unfamiliar with the parts catalog, typically the up to date means up to but not including. So when it says up to 11/2012 that means cars built up to 10/31.

And notice how the revised rack shows up to 7/2013. This could mean 2014 production (which starts July) could have reworked steering like the MY14 F10 LCI.

Woah... So there could be a possible different hub size? That's no bueno considering I have wheels on order.

Hub wouldn't be different size. Possibly reworked to address steering wobble issues. Guessing of course as I'm not a BMW engineer.

I don't understand your post. In the title you say new rack and hub starting 11/2012. Then in your post you say new hub starting 11/2012 and new rack 7/2013? So which is it?

Click the link. It shows a new rack for 11/2012, and then another new rack for 07/2013. The OP says "notice how the revised rack shows up to 7/2013".

It'll be interesting to see how these new racks compare in terms of feel.

My only question is why in the world would they change it in 11/2012 knowing they are going to change it AGAIN in 07/2013? Why not just start putting the 2013 rack in now?

Frustrating knowing that my car will be one of those made in an 8 month window with a unique rack.

It's interesting. Maybe they just want to use this 8 month period as a way of testing it in the real world and if it works as it should maybe they will continue fitting this new design in cars built after July as well, if not design yet another rack.

Could it be some error on realoem.com?

It could very well be an error on realoem or info provided by BMWAG. I just thought it was interesting that the new rack is slated to begin 11/1/2012 and end 6/30/2013. This info on realoem.com could change in the future.

BTW, for previous posters, this 11/2012 production start rack is the 4th P/N revision for the F30 rack. Based on the latest realoem.com update it looks like BMWAG is pushing all 2012 and 2013 F30s (up until but not including 11/2012 production dates) into the 3rd revision rack (as replacement parts).

We shall see what MY14 holds. I'm guessing a rework like whats been leaked for the MY14 LCI F10 cars. I suspect BMWAG is tired of reading the magazine reviews for the F30.

Exclamation I'm a perfectionist and a bit OCD.

This is yet another reason, among many, why I prefer to lease for 24 months.

This is also another reason, again among many, why some BMW enthusiasts wait and purchase/lease LCI models & even later model year vehicles. The cars are even further refined and perfected once real world conditions reach engineering.

This is not a foreign situation to either the launch of a new 3er or a new model BMW.

This is...
okay enough with the "this is"

You make an excellent point. Most of the Bimmers I've owned have been LCI cars. No doubt early production cycle deals with more issues. Its not just BMW. Nature of the beast.

I keep wondering what the facelift will be... the F30 is a really nice looking car (and a big part of why I bought one versus waiting). I suspect they will give it a butt lift for starters...

I'll guess they'll clean up some of the interior criticisms (material quality issues), maybe upgrade iDrive with new controller, probably new hood lines, bumper designs and lamp mods, LED lamps all around...

The usual. Maybe the new engine...

Good.
My VSS steering has developed a light clunk turning the steering wheel left and right, and it's very noticeable when maneuvering around a parking lot.
It feels like something is loose and it sucks.
Doesn't feel very BMW like.

I wonder if the new 7/2013 rack is to fix the whole lack of steering feel and light effort that so many are bitching about, and why the new ATS gets so much praise.

If BMW puts in a better feeling steering rack next summer, then I want that new rack. My car will be nearly a year old at that time, and I'm gonna be pissed if BMW fixes the steering and doesn't retro for the cars already sold. It's not like my steering rack has been perfect since new, I've told my dealer about thunking sounds since the day I picked my 335i up.

Look at the E90 and what was added. There will be more agressive lines, probably on skirt to begin. Revision on lamps in places like daylight LED. Small styling cues that are noticeable. A small HP bump perhaps. Updated iDrive seems very likely. Maybe a few options included. "Future" things like Adaptive Cruise not costing an arm and a leg both...

My guesses anyway. I think its a pattern for those who have seen it. Things like the 330 coming out toward end of run (vs 328) etc. Happened with E46 and E90, right?

In short the kind of stuff we go crazy for but most everyone else doesn't notice.

AKAIK, until BMW specifies "ENDED" for the old part you'll continue to get a replacement that is specified for your production month/year. Once they END it, you get the updated part. So, just because they come out with a new rack, does not mean you'll automatically get it. Sometimes the new part only works in conjunction with other parts BMW may not agree to replace simultaneously. For instance, looking at the links in my first post, the steering column and associated parts changed as well for November. Maybe they need to be changed to match the new rack. A guess, of course.

My bet is that these changes are only to address the wobble/vibration complaints and possibly the rubbing noise some have complained coming from the steering column.

New steering feel will likely be announced as an upgrade (when its really more like a fix! ). Maybe MY14, maybe LCI.

Noob question, do these changes apply for the 328i as well?
I noticed the links you provided were for the 335i

www.realoem.com is your friend.

In a nutshell, YES, 328i impacted similarly.
