ZF8 Sports Automatic fluid change
Hi all,
Is it recommended to change the automatic transmission oil sooner if the car is equipped with the sports automatic transmission (2TB option)? Are the faster and harder shifts more taxing on the fluid? Thanks for the input! P.S. No "lifetime fluid" silliness please... |

No. Lifetime is a ZF term not BMW. Oil change for severe service is between 45-75k miles (you can do the conversion to KM).

When I went into the dealer for the 10k mile service, the tech said that the ATF oil pan was slightly cracked so they had to replace it. If I'm not mistaken, the way to fix that (and to do a ATF filter change) would require the pan be dropped so they would have to do a ATF fill...

My local BMW garage recommends it to be done every 80-100.000km. Had it done at 90k and couldn't feel any difference. They told me the magnets that collect small metal parts had collected less than anticipated but even though I will still get it changed within the next 100k km.
Just be aware of the oil and filter. They are pretty pricy.

If you're enthusiastic about driving your car, you should probably do it within the "severe" service interval. If you want to know whether or not it was truly necessary, you could do an oil analysis on the transmission fluid.
