Base Screen vs. Navigation Screen?
Can anyone confirm this -- two versions of iDrive/infotainment systems now; will all cars get a screen and iDrive, but navigation equipped cars have a bigger screen/different iDrive controller?
Reasoning - The 328 in this photo has a smaller screen and a basic iDrive controller Compared to the 335 M Sport, bigger screen, and as you can see has "media/audio" split vs. audio as well as "tel/nav" split vs. just a telephone button on the iDrive controller.

Yep. All cars get iDrive, but only navigation-equipped vehicles get the larger screen, since the extra real-estate is only needed when you're displaying maps, etc. The screen is the exact same setup that's in the new the F20 1 series (the F20 and F30 share an amazing amount of interior componentry)
You can also look to the E60 / F10 5 series (and current X3 as well, I believe) that have standard iDrive - those vehicles, when not equipped with nav get smaller screens. What I'm wondering is what are we missing out on without getting the larger screen, such as the engine performance displays on the Sport Line. In the photos, the graphics looked too big to fit on the smaller screen. We'll see soon enough... |

It looks like the non-navigation models come with a screen that doesn't look so much like an Ipad, actually more suited to the car IMO. Im looking forward to someone developing a module that will allow utilization of the Idrive screen to be hooked up to an external input such as HDMI from our smartphones. Add HDMI and Google Maps and you'll save yourself afew thousand dollars and have more capabilities

Posts above are correct, BMW has followed this patten in other models for a while now. The $2550 for ZTP has to get you something visually different, that's probably why they made the screen bigger.

I am guessing from the names that the Business Nav is an acceptable, company paid option for folks in EU and maybe UK in particular where a lot of BMWs are sold leased as a company car perk, where the Pro nav is too pricey to be allowed. Also, I think anyone in the US willing to pony up big bucks for the Nav will go all in and get the big screen version. In UK, these are ~1500 vs. 2000 UK pounds for Business vs. Pro Nav. |

6.5 inch is definitely a reasonable size considering it doesnt cost 3-series owners any extra Once someone creates a module or controller box that allows external input we'll all be able to make use of it with Google maps and video. Soo excitedd

Interesting how for the F30 there are different idrive controllers. The non-navi version feels different as well from the navigation-equipped version.
If you look at the F25 X3 the same controller is used for both navi and non-navi. |

Yes, the iDrive for the smaller screen feels different and can't be tilted in all the directions. I actually liked the "cheaper" one's feeling better.
Edit September 2nd: getting the large screen. It is awesome and the 2013 software looks so much better than the old one. Last edited by Micleg; 09-01-2012 at 05:18 PM.. |

How much it did cost you more? The problem here that they say it is impossible to get the wider screen :S they did not even provide the possibility for getting the nav package. However, the wider screen is available here on the 328i and 335i models only.. |
