Another Blown N20

Threw a rod under full throttle in 2nd gear & mid-range RPMs. No details will be provided beyond what you see in the pictures so please don't bother asking or PM'ing me. Motor was replaced under warranty thankfully (final bill came out to $16K). Just posted to share some pictures and to reiterate that these motors are far from bulletproof. Enjoy...

Its more about knowing the limits of this engine and not assume it is as tough as the N54.

Glad your engine was replaced under warranty OP

I wonder how long was the process from the time it was hauled in to the time you got it back. No motor is bullet proof and like Mike said it is all about knowing the limits.

He had a Jb4 and an afe down pipe. Now I don't know if he removed them before the failure. Either way, well played TurboM for being smart and staying off the forums with your story until after the replacement.

lots of wrong assumptions are being thrown in this thread.
1-OP said he will not say what mods he has (if any) so before HE tells us what he had we are just making wild guesses.
2- Which tune used is not important in a blown motor. What is important is knowing how much boost was he pushing with what mods and what fuel.

Example : i push 19-20 psi with 14.5 degrees of timing on my N54 ( e70 ).... Car has been running great for years and all my logs are clean... if i push that much boost and timing with 100% 91, i will probably lose my motor in less than a week.
I did not mention which tune i use because it is not important.
No matter which one i use (JB4,Procede,Cobb,etc..) the results will be exactly the same

So before we make any assumptions lets wait and see exactly what happened with OP (if he decides to tell the story)

The N20 seems to like to throw rods around 23psi and higher. I've noticed most who blow up also have a downpipe. Maybe those are causing boost spikes or something on the more aggressive maps. Just stay with JB4 map 1, or Stage1, if one wants to stay conservative.

I was thinking the same thing. Many folks - myself included - Running JB4 Stage I with no issues. The two recent blown motors were running at least a downpipe and likely a more aggressive map to use with high-octane fuel.

Beyond that I would not speculate further until TurboM chimes back into the thread.

TurboM - Sorry to hear about this, but glad it is being replaced under warranty.

As I mentioned before, those two blown motors in our forum are from EWG cars, which boost control is not complete. They all blew up on JB4 map2 (21psi). I GUESS frequent overboosting above 23-24psi might have been a cause. If you wanna see, data log your car on JB4 map 2 with e85 mix or race fuel. You will see it happening if your car has an EWG.

We haven't heard any N20 with pneumatic wastegate that had an issue with even map 7 (23psi). I am hoping all would be okay when EWG control becomes complete and JB4 quits its beta status.

I'm not making wild assumptions. A simple search would show he had a jb4 and afe down pipe that he sold. If you line up the time frames and his posts around those times you can almost certainly say that he still had those on. But like I said maybe he removed them.
