Car hit while stopped at a stop light
9 months old and my car got smacked a little by a youngish fella in an Expedition yesterday. I was at the second stop light after a highway off ramp, sitting at the red light and he came barreling at me a good 20+ mph over the speed limit. I saw him coming as the light turned and he was swerving out of the way. I hit the gas and nearly got out of his way.
I think my car would have been totaled if I hadn't moved before he hit. I got away with just a scrape. He was nearly in tears and apologizing profusely, so it was hard to be too mad at him (pretty sure he was very clear that he was driving like an idiot). His insurance will do its thing, and I'm trying not to be pissed (mostly over the bother of having to deal with getting it fixed). This is the second time in a year I've been hit while sitting properly at a red light (the last time was in my e90 and the lady in front of me backed into me because she was tired of waiting for the light). Folk need to calm down or buy cars with better brakes! |

I understand your frustration...
Glad you weren't in a more serious crash though. Whiplash can be a bitch.

Glad you and the driver are ok (even though he was driving like an idiot). The damage looks minor so I'd imagine it'll be a quick fix.
It def sucks to have such a new car have to go into the body shop but it could've been a lot worse. |

If it was on my insurance I would get it fixed out of pocket, but I didn't do it and he wasn't driving carefully so his insurance will have to deal with it. He seemed like a nice kid (early 20's) but he was driving badly and I'm not paying out of pocket to avoid the insurance hit he's going to get for it. Actions have consequences. I am very glad the consequences to him will just be financial and not the injuries both of us could have taken if he had hit me dead on. He was driving an Expedition, though, so I'm pretty sure the only injuries would have been mine :-)

This could have been said about my car as well... after the bumper cover came off they the repair quadrupled in cost. Take it to a BMW certified repair facility to get it back to factory specs.

It will be dealt with by the repair shop owned by the dealership that sold me the car. No one else gets to touch her.

It is too large of an area to patch. A respray is necessary for this one. It should be fairly easy to do though depending on if the bumper is gouged or not.

sorry to hear but glad you made it out okay, and it wasn't worse. Good job scanning your mirrors to avoid worse damage too.

Welcome to the club, was hit too and it ended up costing HER insurance something in the vicinity of 3K due to 2 attempts at fixing. Bumper was twisted and they tried repairing but it wasn't good enough so they had to order a new bumper. And they couldn't do a decent paint match with white. My scrape looked even less visible than yours.

Also, check on the rear bump reinforcer. If you look under the back of the car, you'll see the shock absorber like structures that absorb some impact. Hopefully no deformation, so no replacement, else it's quite a costly repair. When I got rear ended (2 days before my car was a month old), the brackets that hold the diffuser in place were also cracked.

I took her in for the repair estimate. The rear-bumper reinforcer-thingy looked intact to the certified shop guy, the parking sensor still works but is a bit loose. The estimate was $577 for making her pretty again. The other driver didn't contest fault and his insurance company sent me a check yesterday. Pretty darn good service from American Family (his insurance, not mine).
Getting her fixed next week. Last edited by bri1042; 07-09-2014 at 04:16 PM.. Reason: words hard. |

That's pretty cheap. Some idiot hit me at a red saying his foot slipped off the brake after he had already come to a complete stop. That cost around $3k, and required a new bumper cover.
Edit: sometimes I wonder if that guy hit my on purpose for no reason. It was a lot of force for him to have hit me that hard after he'd been stopped awhile.

It's just a paint issue...no actual damage that the shop or I could find. The bumper cover isn't damaged other than the paint. I think I'd be getting a new car if I hadn't moved forward when I saw him coming, though.

2013 Ford Fusion SE rental for the next few days while my pretty car is getting fixed. I drove the Fusion to work and so far I'm not too fond of the thing. This is going to be an annoying couple of days.
