Diesel prices were almost the same with gas prices in US. Is it the same these days? This may be another reason why people living in US do not prefer diesel cars.

I personally dislike diesels due to engine sound, acceleration at still, and the exhaust smell. Otherwise, 3.20d is superior to 3.20 when acceleration at higher speeds is considered.

Here are some more reasonnings from BBC http://www.bbc.com/autos/story/20130...ot-buy-diesels

Kind of sound reasoning. In particular the difference in regulation on NOx pollutants seems to explain a lot. But that is changing with Euro6 tightening the knob, and I heard that France is going to tax diesel to extinction on public health grounds (and the claim is not without merits, so it should just spread like wildfire).

I buy BMW for its sporty feeling and I don't consider diesel engines to be sporty at all.

I enjoy my 6 cyl. engine from its initial cheerful hallo broooom... when I start it in my garage and then its beautiful sound when changing gears in normal daily use.

I know the performance of a good diesel would be about the same... but not the driving enjoyment.

To those Diesel Haters: Drive a 330d and it will blow your mind and preserve your wallet. Best F30 without a doubt. My opinion is unanimous.

And the 335i is not the top selling 3 in the US. Sales of the 328i outpace the 335i by orders of magnitude.
The guy lives in Toronto, not the US.

I live on the border of US/Canada. When i go to Toronto, I see many many 3-series, and the ones I've seen lately on my last trip have been mostly 335is. Either I'm going to the wrong place, or the guy is correct.

I'm counting E90/92/93 335i too, btw.

Prices can be significantly different in other countries. Here in Belgium, a barebone F30 320d costs 34450 euro = 44878 US dollar. Mine ended up costing 52000 euro = 67740 US dollar, because of the options! (parking sensors, Xenon lights, automatic gearbox, rain and light sensors, back camera, heads-up display, stop&go cruise control, ...)

It needs about 5 liter/100 km, which is 47 mpg.

About 60% of the cars in Belgium are diesels. In the '70, '80 and '90, diesel was significantly cheaper than petrol, but nowadays the difference is minimal:

Petrol price: 1.77 euro/liter or 8.73 US dollar / gallon
Diesel price: 1.50 euro/liter or 7.40 US dollar / gallon

PS. in Holland:
- a barebone BMW F30 328i automatic starts at 45502 euro = 59275 US dollar
- a barebone BMW F30 335i automatic starts at 54781 euro = 71363 US dollar

Here you can get a 328i for cheap, but if you get into an accident -> ER -> surgery -> bankruptcy. That wouldn't not happen in Belgium

I guess it's give and take

Sales of the 328 are far greater than the 335 in Canada. Plural of anecdote is not data...

let me rephrase it, this topic is about bimmer which is bmw cars, talking about countries and differences leads no where with comments like ohhh US is in power or china is in power, comparing country to country creates hate and for me this forum is not about that at all. I say peaceout bro meaning please be chill and lets focus on the diesel topic. Isnt this what the topic is all about?

Oh, how utterly boring this would be. There's nothing like a bit of deviation to spice things up.
Thanks for the rephrase. Most useful.

Isn't it just to expensive for the the US to produce a low sulfur clean diesel option. My wife has a 2012 x5 diesel and yes it's an awesome truck that gets great mileage but the cost of diesel in Florida just keeps going up. Getting to the point where the savings is minimal.

I just bought the AH3 for myself and its said to get stupid mileage in ecopro. But I really didn't buy the car for MPG I bought it for speed.

The US is way behind in diesel tech. The stigma of black smoke will always follow.

For sure a diesel car makes much more sense in Europe than in US since the fuel prices here are more than double, but if I look in the BMW's range of models I can't find so many advantages of a diesel sold (or that will be sold) in US than its petrol brother:
35i with 300hp vs 35d with only 265hp;
28i with 240hp vs future 28d which is based on the 20d model in Europe (~ 200hp);
We can take into account the driving pleasure of an MT car (petrol vs diesel), and the examples can continue!

People insist on using this euro to dollar conversion when people in Europe are not converting dollars into euros. In essense it costs $66,000, still more than here.

If europeans were smart and patient (and assuming they could register US cars in europe) the better idea would be to actually convert euros at a 30% premium into dollars and then buy a BMW here and take it back to europe. US cars are much safer and have much higher safety standards than european cars, generally speaking.
