I used a jewelers flat head screwdriver and carefully pried each one off. It takes time and you have to go slow and have patience.

Pry the teeth away from the post. I inserted a flat head screwdriver in the slots and twisted the head to pry the center of each tooth away from the post. It doesn't take much.

So I went to my workshop and dug out some trim pieces I had and put real carbon fiber on them. I have finished the door pulls and center console. I also did the gear shift surround, but with a twist. I normally wrap the aluminum looking trim in CF and leave the underside portion OEM black. This time I wanted to be different, so I did the underside in CF and color matched the top side in Estoril blue. I also did the steering wheel trim piece even though I already had one in CF. I am also going to color match the accent stripes on the dash pieces. I am starting to carbon fiber those pieces today/tomorrow. Anyway, here are the pieces before they are installed. Installed pics coming soon.
How did you remove the steering wheel trim piece? Thanks.

I put a small screwdriver behind the gray plastic and popped one corner, then I could slowly pry the piece loose going around the edges.

The black trim piece that holds it can be removed when the steering wheel is off ...

Don't even need to remove the steering wheel. Just pop the airbag out, and remove the two screws behind it holding the larger trim piece in place plus the screw behind the M-logo at the bottom of the wheel. Then you can pry that piece away.

To remove the airbag there are two holes at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions on the steering wheel near where it connects to the column. I use a large diameter punch to push the spring in till it unlatches the airbag on that side (you'll need to apply a bit of pulling pressure on the bag to get it unsat once the latch clears). Note that if you make contact between the rear of the bag and the rest of the steering wheel with the punch it will sound the horn.

Once unlatched, unplug the single connector on the inside of the steering wheel (not the connectors on the rear side of the airbag).

You should then see the two screws holding the larger trim piece at about the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.

I couldn't remember about taking the black SW trim off...but you are correct...airbag off, then it can be unscrewed. Thanks for the reminder...

I really like what you did with the trim pieces! I'm thinking of wrapping my trim pieces with 3m carbon fiber wrap. What's the specific product that you used?

Thanks...I used real carbon fiber, no 3m vinyl, epoxy resin, and automotive clear coat...then wet sanded and polished.

I recommend taking a look at VViViD Epoxy CF wrap. The 3M stuff has a more matte texture. The VViViD will replicate the look of roll_the_dice's real CF better.

I did a mockup with some, and it looks good.

Hi roll_the_dice,

Nice work on the carbon fiber!
I was planning on doing this cf wrapping myself because I don't like the performance trims because of the alcantara.
Did you wrap the carbon around the edges of the trims or did you stop right at the edge?
I'm thinking of stopping at the edge and not around it because of fitting but i'm afraid it might get loose after a while. Any tips? I don't have any recent experience with raisin but i'm a quick picker-upper...
Kind regards,
KingpinRCR

Thanks...I am not an alcantara fan either...and I definitely am not a fan of the textured CF that BMW uses on the F30 either.

Don't wrap it around to edges that don't show...it will make it bulky and really serves no purpose. If the wood shows on the OEM trim it gets covered in CF...otherwise no point.
