I tried 6000k once and the reduced visibility was not worth the "cool factor," IMHO.

if you use cheap bulbs, that would happen or if they were halogen bulbs, yes it would be dimmer. What brand were you using?

That is not true. HID bulbs with a higher color temperature will produce less usable light.

It was a while back so I can't remember specifically, but it was definitely a name brand... Philips or PIAA, IIRC?

And no, it wasn't a conversion kit. Direct HID bulb replacement in OEM projectors.

You shouldn't get any codes by replacing the bulbs. However, the higher the color temperature the less visible light output. 6000k usually has a slight purple tinge to it and 8000k is slightly blue although it does depend on the bulb. The projector lenses can amplify the color hue a bit as well. I wouldn't go higher than 6000k as the light output really starts to drop off. That being said, I have 8000k on my E46 but I also have xenon fogs that help make up for less visible light on the road.

For reference:

4300K is really the sweetspot for light output. Anything higher and you're decreasing your visibility.

Joe, any luck on changing the bulb?

I was able to access the headlight cover by removing the plastic panel on the wheel liner. After removing the cover there is a metal clip holding the D1S bulb but I wasn't able to unclip since the space was tight for me to access (probably need to remove the front wheel and jack up the car for more room) and I didn't wanna force and break anything.
