Rear bumper paint poor match
Car was picked up on 1st of September and has now done 400miles.
After having to fully go over it and detail it my self due to poor dealer preparation I started to notice that the rear bumper seemed to be really noticeable a different shade to the main body, depending on the ambient light. It seems more noticeable on the drivers side as well. I am aware that the bumpers are not painted as part of the main painting process and very rarely match up but I find myself keep looking at it now after in various lighting it is now starting to bug me. I don't like resprays on brand new cars but If I were to go in to the dealerships body shop is it possible that the bumper could be repainted without 'blending' in to the sides of the car and end up being somewhere near? Not quite sure whether to just put up with it or not

To my eye red seems to show the difference more than other colours, it's one of the reasons I didn't buy red, have a look in the MR picture section and you will notice they all seem to look like yours

I have noticed a colour mismatch on most of the cars I have looked at and yes the red does seem to stand out more.
Would this be a reason for BMW not looking at it then? |

I think a lot of it is actually down to the shape of the bumper and angle of it compared to the body it joins. I've noticed this on all of my F31s and I'm pretty sure it's because at that point there is a definite angle change from the body to the bumper and the body is curved whereas the bumper is flat. If you crouch down to look at the bumper at the same angle as you are the bodywork, you'll probably find the colour is the same.

Went over to the dealers body shop yesterday for a bit of a chat.
I was shown around a compound of brand new cars by the work shop manager to help him to initially explain the issue. All I can say is that out of all the new cars there only a few had colour matchs that were anywhere near. Some lighter and some darker. This included some M4's.😳 So the manager thinks that mine is exceptable but has left 'the ball on my court'. He says that he could attempt it but would not guarantee it to be 100%. As we know the only real way to do it is to blend in the paint to the quarter panels which basically not happening. I can come back to him anytime if needed. |

Bumpers are always different shades, even on my individual colour, my previous Mercedes was the same.

The BMW Body shop has had 2 goes at spraying my rear bumper after a minor rear shunt I had and it's still not 100% right colour wise they're waiting for the colour match expert to come back off the sick to have another go. It should be a match going by the colour code that they have for my car but unfortunately it's a shade darker

It's just this problem that worries me.
Was told yesterday that they only use two colour chips to try to match up - one lighter and one darker than the paint code. Really? |

I've noticed this paint mismatch between bumper and body on several of my cars in the past, non BMWs.
I've always thought one factor is the different materials,i.e.steel body but plastic bumper. Also, once you are dealing with metallic/pearl paints the scope for error is greater since, even if the paint is identical, differences in spraying conditions/technique wil produce different effects. I think you have to live with it,sadly. In my experience the best colour for consistency and ease of matching is plain white!! |

When the bonnet of my 330d was into be resprayed,I was chatting to the bodyshop manager who mentioned it was very difficult to match the colour of the bumper to the rest of the car.He showed me a brand new f32 were you could plainly see the difference between the bumper and bonnet, where the bumper looked almost cream next to the White of the bodywork.

BMW refinish paint is made by BASF (last time I checked) . Your car may or may not have been factory sprayed with a BASF product. BMW uses different paint oems and they switch based on various factors.
Plus the car body is factory sprayed with a product that more closely resembles electrostatic. As far as plastic parts are concerned, they aren't sprayed with car, however supposedly using paint from same lot code. Meaning they do what they can to match. Plastic has different properties than steel. Then there's other factors, such as weather, that play a role in how the final product looks. You have a metallic color and the metallic flake reacts to light differently on steel than it does on plastic. As far as refinish is concerned, I wouldn't do it unless you just can't live with the car in its current state. Most resprays are detectable and typically not in a good way. Some body shops and painters are exceptional, but that is the exception, not the rule. And this applies to BMW approved body shops too. I've seen some poor resprays from BMW approved shops.
