Should I pay $1800 to CPO my car if I have to spend another $1800 for it to qualify?

So, I've opted to purchase my car at the end of lease. I negotiated a deal to purchase it at the residual amount, but that number INCLUDES the $1,800 to certify the car (or $1,800 less that residual if I opted to forego certification).

So here's the rub...they call me today to tell me that I have to buy two (2) new tires (front tires are at 40% wear), update the NAV, and a couple of other items, all to the tune of ANOTHER $1,800. So essentially, I would be spending $3,600 for CPO.

My SA points out that the two tires have to be replaced anyway at some point, I'd get a NAV update (which I realize I can get from other sources for less than the $350 they're charging me), AND BMW finances CPO at a much lower interest rate. All good points, BUT, my question is...

...would I be better off to find a "better" after market extended warranty at this point?

[p.s. It really peeves me that they would make ME buy new tires for MY car...it's a wear and tear item...I get it if I'm turning it in for them to sell at a pre-arranged value, but since I'm buying it, I don't know why it matters.]

If it's your car and you already know it....why not try another dealer?
Ask them if they will certify it without the tires etc...I'd personally never buy a 3rd party warranty. Purchased one a few years back and had a bad experience.

Buy the Platinum ESC for less than that, which covers more.

Did they offer you a price on BMW extended platinum warranty? Like Kambrich said, I may be a better option for you since you know the car and you wont have to go through the certification process but things like the nav screen and radio are covered.

CPO Inspections are sticklers on tire thread. They are known to reject tires with 95% tread left!

Considering Bank of America was offering 2.39% for 60 month financing on BMW's coming off lease last week, what is BMWFS w/CPO Financing offering you?

And B of A did not require any inspection.

Approximately what would that run? I realize there are lots of factors.

He told me CPO requires 50% wear and the fronts were at 40%.

BMW is offering 1.9% on CPO.

Your dealer is right that you will need new tires anyway, but not at his ridiculous prices. If that's the make or break, then I'd tell him you will pay Tire Rack directly, and have them drop shipped to the dealer...or he can match the Tire Rack price.

Backing out the tire price, what do you think is the likelihood that you would have warranty claims over the remaining 3 years of the CPO warranty that will come to the cost of certifying the car? I think I'd pass.

That's the $3,000 question. My 2006 E90 330i has been very reliable. My 2014 335i has as well, EXCEPT for the new 6MT Transmission at 24,000 miles (which would presumably have run $8,000 to replace).

I think they're full of shit on the NAV. I purchased a CPO that was two years old and the NAV was the original from the production date. I even asked about them updating the NAV and they said, "for $350" and I said "no thanks." So I think they're just trying to nickle and dime you on this whole deal.

Might want to see if other members had the most up-to-date NAV when they purchased their CPO. Like I said, mine was a couple years old.

As someone with a 2013 328i with 19k miles was quoted $2900 last week, it should still be less than $3600.

Any BMW Dealer can give you the price.

And you do not need a CPO inspection.

Use the remaining 40% of your thread....pay $50 for Nav update with the money you saved.

With all due respect, how can you talk of great rates without knowing terms, especially as you stated the lease was up on Saturday?

Keep the tires

If you're inclined to take the deal, you can let them replace the tires on the condition they give you the old ones. Your new tires will wear out eventually (sooner rather than later, based on my experience), at which time you can put your 40%ers back on and finish wearing them out.

I didn't realize the rate would be different until he texted me late yesterday after I'd left the dealership. Regardless, the rate is just one factor.

He said they'd give me the tires. I'm not as upset about them requiring two new tires as I am them requiring me to buy run-flats.

You should find a forum member willing to swap wheels for a couple days + some beer.
