Mid range suvs

Looking at them this weekend.

Looking at Quashqai- cheap as 0%Apr and good kit
cx3- looks smart again fairly cheap and good spec
Seat Ateca- looks smart, same as tiguan etc but more expensive.

Any others we should look at?
Renault versions are fugly.
Skoda don't fancy it.
Premium Germans too expensive.

One of my business partners has a Hyundai Santa Fe. It's actually very impressive for a non premium.

Toyota CH-R gets good reviews
Hyundai Tucson/Kia sportage
Mazda CX-5

The Mazda would probably be my favourite on brand reputation and looks.

ETA - sorry just realised that you had already listed its little sister cx3

Volvo V40 is my choice, though maybe a little bit more than the others you have mentioned. Other than that the qashqui is the one that impressed me the most.

Wife has got Qashqai N-Connecta, crazy cheap for the amount of kit, but the 1.4 petrol is underpowered and the CVT gearbox is pretty pants, we will hopefully get a diesel one next time.

Next time we’d also consider:

Hyundai Tucson
Seat Ateca
VW Tiguan
Ford Kuga
Mazda CX3
Honda CRV

To be honest we’ll get whichever one is cheapest on lease with all the same kit as the N-Connecta

Yes they are very cheap with broker sites. I was looking at the 1.6 turbo petrol 160bhp.
The n connecta is great value but even the top spec one is not that much more.

Plus I've already checked you can get a tuning box to take it to 200 bhp

I actually like the Ateca or Mazda but the Nissans are so cheap it's hard to ignore.

Good to know about the gear box thanks.

I have to be vaguely interested in driving it as it will be our only car for a while.

Sorry I meant ours is 1.2 petrol turbo. Maybe the gearbox will be better with a higher powered engine.

Yes the Qashqai holds it value so well it comes out much cheaper than the others on lease, you can get them under £200 per month with the manual gearbox, there’s really no point buying used cars these days!

We've had a CX3 2.0 sport nav AWD for about 8 months now and absolutely love it, good handling, great traction, nice interior, packed with tech, AWD system seems to be top notch, cracking gearbox and easy to have fun in.

The one downside is the mzd connect system which with the exception of audio playback is a bit shit - it often needs a forced reboot and the nav is slow and clunky.

Thanks good info. I know we are not talking 340s here but how nippy is it? The Ateca for example comes with the vag 1.4tsi at 150bhp but torque as well due to the turbo. Being n.a and what 120bhp does it go ok? They look nice.

My mother has a CX5. I wouldn't have one but the CX3 is great. Same sort of car in a smaller package. More nimble. Better looking.

The 2.0 petrol is 150bhp, Mazda's philosophy was 'the right size' when it comes to engines rather than the continuous trend of downsizing. This means that it doesn't feel gutless at the top end, it's pretty torquey at the bottom end (although obviously a turbo'd engine would be stronger here), but it has a lovely smooth torque curve. It's also (because it's the correct size and not always boosting) pretty good on fuel. It's essentially a MX5 engine. The gearbox is fantastic too (did I mention the gearbox?).

Oh and Mazda also mount the throttle pedal to the floor rather than hanging it from above to aid with driving feel. The regenerative braking feature on the 150bhp engine is very clever too, rather than BMW's method of charging the battery in short bursts, it charges a capacitor which can take much more power and charge quicker, meaning the car is effectively powered off the capacitor while you're driving, further boosting economy.

Headlights are amazing too, they do the dancing thing (but without the shadow box) and are brighter and better than the BMW LEDs.

The wife and I refer to qashqai as cash cunts, don't know why, just kinda stuck.

is that 200 per month pcp or lease? We're between buying the wife's Renault capture (6.5k final payment) or getting another pcp circa £200/m. the net cost is roughly the same but now being a contractor I quite like the idea of clearing off the finance.

Ours is on lease. N-connecta manual with 3 months upfront was just under £200pm, but we added the auto box (which is a bit pants, but still much better than changing gears yourself) for an extra £40pm

I rather liked the Mercedes Vito we were driven around in in Tuscany, Piedmont and Amalfi, not sure I'd buy one though
