Want to retrofit fog lights, not sure if I should

Hi all!

I'm collecting my new (to me) 2013 F30 335i on Thursday, I'm very excited! Once I have the car I would like to swap out the halogen fog lights with the LCI LED units.

I'm happy I have the part numbers and coding requirements to carry out the upgrade. However, I am concerned that reading through this forum it seems that BMW could undo my work at any time if the car ever goes in for servicing (routine or otherwise). For example, I am thinking about getting the MPPK at some point and as part of this the various ECU firmwares can be upgraded by BMW as part of the process thereby removing my coding and possibly making it impossible to recode, have I understood this correctly?

It's not the end of the world if I don't have front LED fogs, but they do look awesome and seem to complement the Xenons nicely. Also, when Mini upgraded their driving lights/fog lights to LED they offered an official retrofit pack, is it possible BMW might do the same for the F30?

Thanks!

Your coding will only be wiped out if the ECU is overwritten by the dealer. Even if the coding was wiped out you would just recode. Your fogs will flash on cold start and then ever few mins for the warm check, so fairly easy to spot.

As for the retrofit for the F30, very doubtful. The fogs have been out for a while on the 4 series. Alternatively you could just replace the white halogen bulb....no coding required and miles cheaper.

Personally, I've left the fogs as they. I heard the halogen is better when it's really foggy! Instead I upgrading the front/rear indicators and brake lights to LED. Total cost was less than upgrading the fogs to OEM LED.

Interesting that the LED fogs actually suck, maybe I will skip that one then! Do you have a link to the lights you used to upgrade the indicators/brake?

Hi,

I brought my LEDs from HorizonLEDs, they do promo codes all the time so might be worth waiting for one. They sell as singles so make sure you get two of each. The 50W is the halogen equivalent, otherwise that would one crazy retina burning LED. I've found them to be bright and very happy with them and no problems on sunny days.

Front Indicator (Amber) - 581/BAU15S/PY21W CREE 50W LED X 2
Rear Indicator (White) - 1156/BA15S/P21W CREE 50W LED X 2
Brake Lights (Red) - 1156/BA15S/P21W CREE 50W LED X 2
