EDIT: Is there a service manual or something that a layperson like me can get a hold of?

Nothing commercially available for F30 yet in terms of public manuals.

Actually looking for work ( laid off in a hostile takeover of last company I was at ). So do this for fun.
BMW here have to comply with racial quotas and have no openings for whites at the moment.

Have Finance and some Engineering qualifications

I got funny looks from people passing by as I was snapping the engine bay shots.

Same as most other BMW's
It actually looks easier than the E90 that had a Positive terminal distribution board clip onto the battery

Should be:
Undo the earth terminal and place it out the way.
Undo the positive terminal and tuck it out the way behind the matting.
Undo the 2 bolts that hold the cross bar (crash brace) over the battery.
Undo any battery clamps at the bottom rear of the battery.
Lift up the 2 plastic battery handles on the middle of the battery.
Lift up the battery using the handles.
