I used to think so too, but now I'm not so sure after having F30 335 for 3 yr, having F80 M3 now, and getting many many F30 328 loaners
335 is a nice car for sure, but for sport driving, an M3 of some generation is way to go anyway (in my opinion). If I had to do it again, I would have gotten a CPO E90M or go straight to used car market for E36M or E46M, instead of leasing 335 335 is the odd man out in my opinion. In the future, I'm either getting a 28i/30i as a commuter, or to another M3 For a pure commuter, I think F30 328 is a really great choice. Not much difference between that and my F80 when stuck in traffic |

I guess it's all relative. I wouldn't consider an M unless that was also going to be my main track car as well. |

I like the F30 320 with the sport pack and 6MT at lot. I think it's a really underrated car and a nice choice to get a RWD car for a lower cost Agreed M cars are great for track, but they are super easy daily drivers as well. I have taken my car on 1200 mile euro road trip and 2200 mile coast to coast USA road trip with no issues, and drive it to the office and grocery etc like any other 3er It is definitely worth considering the M and dropping options from a 335/340 to get one (obviously I'm biased!). Talking out the other side of my mouth, there are times I think getting a 328d with a cheap lease for commuter and getting a pre-modded E36M or E46M for fun/track is the way to go. Trying to do both in 1 car gets $$$ |

I've owned both. If money is not an issue, then buy 340i defiantly. The power delivery of the six cylinder is turbine like and you can't compare. You can modify the 4cyl for more power and better sound, but you can't replicate the smooth power delivery.

The only thing wrong about the N20 is that it's not a BMW inline 6!

yeah... so i just drove a 328... it as fun and peppy, to a certain point. That being said, I can see myself being tired of the diesel sounding engine and the non linear pulling effort of the N20. Felt like it was trying way too hard to handle the 240 horses, IMHO. Believe I will be going with a 335/340. Again, appreciate everyone's comments but i guess i am a I6 guy after all.

I don't think so... the front seats of the 3 series are roomier than my Accord.. The back seats take a back seat to the Accord tho! (you see what i just did there?!? The back seat taking a bac.... yeah, ok!!) i have always been amazed with the space the front seats have compared to all my other cars. i am more comfortable in the front seats of the 3 than in the wifes 11 Nissan Max.. now that is saying something!!! besides, it's just me and her! if we need more space, i have her Max.

Now, I am a tall(y) built man. Let's just say, ole MJ would be shorter than me, by 1 and 1/2"! So I have to be careful with my choice of vehicle, although, I love smaller vehicles.. I thought about a 5 series but I really do not like big cars! Even the size of this Accord is just a bit too big for my taste... It's a tall person thang! Unless you're over 6'2" tall, you would not understand!!! Nah but seriously, I like the front space of the 3. It is perfect for me! Really looking forward to moving on from this Accord back into a Bimmer.

The original question was N20 or N55? The answer is B58.

The better answer would be S55.

I'm going to jump in here and piss someone off I'm sure. Have a 2015 328 xdrive with the 8sp sports trans and bms jb+ And launch control. With half a tank of 93, just the driver and 65 degrees outside I consistently run 0 to 60 in 4.8 flat and 13.1 at 103 in the 1/4. Keep in mind the JB plus was 200 bucks. Another thing to know it which I don't think people are considering but is important with the f30 N20 is mileage increasing hp up until about 25k. I'm putting 260 to the wheels and similar torque.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I daily a 328 xdrive m sport. My weekender is an e92 m3.
I think of them both in terms of jets. The M3 would be my F-14. Loud. Fast. Not that easy to maintain. Loves gas. Handles well for something this bit. No longer made! The 328 would be my F/A-18. Good at everything, great at nothing. Good on gas. Good on room. Good acceleration. Good handling. You get the point. To then extend this analogy, the 340 would be a Super Hornet. Looks like a 328. Is more capable overall. In 3 years and 80,000 miles, my 328 has been great to me!

There is nothing quite as smooth as a BMW inline-6. While I like my wife's 228i convertible (with N26 SULEV engine), my 335i's N55 is a quantum leap better in terms of not just power, but smooth delivery and better sound. Having power pulses every 60 degrees of rotation rather than every 90 makes a big difference.
