Hi
Son turned 13 today. Says he’d like to buy an Xbox - mainly as most of his mates have them and they play mainly FIFA, overwatch and fortnite online. He tells me! We’d supplement his contribution. Any recommendations? No particular budget - but 1x seems pricey at £450! But maybe is hugely worth the premium - I have absolutely no idea.

I got my One X for £385 new/sealed off ebay, I am selling my old One for around £120 though which makes the purchase even smaller.

It has made a bit of difference on Forza 7 on my 1080p tv, mainly looking at the cars in the shop/garage it has gotten rid of the jagged edges on them, but a One S will be more than good enough for a 13 year old imo.

One S will do I'd honestly say? Got my lad one for Xmas really good. (My god this email and passwords all takes ages to set up though!)

But a new TV currently at Currys and get a £100 voucher off an X Box too.

Forgive me if i wrong but if the main purpose is to play his mates online surely you need to get the same version of the console that his mates have got else he won't be able to play them?

Xbox One, One S & One X are all the same consoles that play the same games, just with varying levels of graphics quality.

I'll keep it simple. 2 choices:
X box one x: best graphics quality. Only notable on a 4K TV. If he won't be using a 4K TV you are paying a premium for nothing.
X box one s: Excellent console. Ideal for 1080p TVs. I have one connected to a 4K TV and still looks amazing.

Both will play the same copy of FIFA. He will need an "XBOX live" subscription to play mates online. You can pay monthly, or buy vouchers for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

Another vote for the Xbox one s.

Got one for my son - made him save up for it (with a bit of help from us!). I knew nothing about them.

It’s a good piece of kit. We have now removed DVD player from the room as playing dvds is much better on Xbox - upscales.

That’s not true mate, the One X makes a big difference on 1080p TVs! Not just that it renders everything in 4K and then downscales it which means better antialiasing (removal of jagged edges) but all the other graphical improvements like better textures, lighting, shadows and better frame rates etc. all work on 1080p, plus also the loading times are faster, takes about 30% less time to load each track on Forza 7 for example.

Good knowledge, but it's a limiting factor in the current sales of the X everyone thinks you need a 4k TV.

X is a very powerful console better than the PS Pro but MS have struggled to get that across in the UK.

I guess MS think ‘4K’ is an easier sell than ‘better graphics’, because most people into graphics have a gaming PC instead.

I am currently downloading the Forza 7 PC demo as I think it will be interesting to compare the two versions back to back.

Perhaps but they are struggling in the UK and the lack of X specific content is difficult and the situation is even more confused with the AAA titles from the 3rd party publishers, all 1st party games releases are X ready with true 4k some of the others aren't.

Needs a price drop and a game in the box to offer better value which will come, great console just poorly marketed at the moment.

No, I’m recommending it based on all the things I listed in the post you quoted

And anyway it’s only £370, a decent gaming PC will cost you £500 just for the graphics card alone these days!

I have the X, S and a 4k gaming pc and the X is really good. Forza runs in 4k at 60fps and looks stunning. Whenyu hgi back to playing it in 1089 you realise how crap it looks. I’d get the D then you are future proof for a while
