Did I damage my engine??

So I went to Niagra Falls last weekend, the weather was perfect and I left the car in comfort mode since I was going to take it easy and continue with break in the car. When I left the odometer read 956 km. as I got to 407 west, I noticed all kinds of cars were trying to drive right beside me or pass me as fast as they could. I maintained 120km/hr for the most part but all of a sudden this GTI came behind me , went to the left of me and then pulled in front of me and slowed down. I had to break not to rear end him. He did that a few times and needless to say my wife was very scared and agitated as I was. So after a few kilometres of this, wife said kick his ass. I put it in sport, put the transmission in sport and floored it. He tried to keep up but couldn't and finally gave up. Now my question is I noticed I red lined the car and reached speed of 200km/hr for a few minutes. Did I damage anything? I didn't notice anything different on the way back but I'm afraid of what might happen in the future...

OP, are you trying to show off?

Anyway, I don't get it ... you redlined the engine for a few minutes, or you went 200kph for a few minutes?

If you just redlined the engine while accelerating (i.e. for a brief period) you have nothing to worry about.

If you kept it @ redline for a few minutes - well - who knows? I don't think that's good for it...

In any case - where you shifting manually?
On the 8 speed auto, I don't see how you could have kept it at redline @ only 200kph...

I red lined the engine while accelerating. Also maintained 200km/hr for a few minutes in Auto. Glad you think there is nothing to worry about. No I wasn't trying to show off, just wanted to lose the idiot in the GTI so my wife wouldn't be scared anymore. I was just minding my own business, but it's other cars that initiate this kind of behaviour not me.....

U should have gotten in front of the gti and break hard to make him rear end u. Thats would i would do to him anyways

There are lots of cars faster than my car while I was on the highway, don't know what it is about BMWs, but somehow they attract idiot racers who think by beating you make themselves feel better I guess....

Lol, I thought about doing that but with wife in the car that wasn't a viable option if you know what I mean, the only option was to lose him.

Well, to answer the OP I don't think he did any harm to his engine.

If I was in this situation, I would just move into the slow lane and slow down. If I was still being harassed on the road, I would find a public place to pull off the road. Responding to road rage with like is just asking to get into an accident or worse. Two wrongs don't make a right. But I am 63 and have nothing to prove and want to live much longer.

Not sure I would want to make anyone rear end me on purpose! Repairs are really hard to make right. I still have to have my bumper repainted after the first repair job was botched.

The better option would have been to just slow down and put some distance between the two of you. That being said, you didn't hurt your car.

Yeah, you probably ruined the engine for driving like that. Since the engine is basically worthless, you can sell your car to me for $10,000.

OP: I seriously doubt you did any harm to your engine with one quick excursion to the redline. There are many people who strongly believe that this is the proper way, the best way, to break-in an engine - the so-called "hard break-in". So you can relax, you've covered both methods. Plus, here is an excerpt from the factory web site that builds the N55 engine: "Another examination process conducted as a random test on individual engines . . . is the dynamic engine audit, with engines running at maximum power for a lengthy period." Have you noticed how BMW just loves the word "dynamic". Maybe you've already got one of those dynamic engines. That's worth $10k extra when you sell the car.

And this, folks, is why every single car I drive has a dashcam. Just try this stunt with me, I savor the day some idiot is this stupid. Of course, I'm not going to tell the idiot that pulls this stunt that he's on video. Quite happy to let him make his statement to the police and further incriminate himself with filing a false report.

Seems to be a phenomenon with mostly VW, and "Ricers" in the Toronto Area.

I agree. I don't live in Toronto anymore (used to) and don't have this problem in the city I currently live in. There is something about VW owners in TO that I can't figure out. Are they all under illusion that VW is a race car? No insult to the GTI owners but I think if they really want power they should spend a little more....

I had a D-bag do the same thing to me. He was in some beater going 60 in the fastest lane, and I came up behind maintaining decent distance but giving him a hint he needs to move over. He braked really hard in the middle of the road, and I could hear my tires almost lose grip when I braked. A long HONK.

Then he moves to the right lane and as I am inching closer, he moves back in front of me, almost getting rear ended. another long HONK. I was pissed, thats not how people drive on freeways. I was not even tailgating him.

I followed him for a bit, on the freeway as I was on my course, and he changed lanes, so did I. He probably thought I will chase him down (which I had no intentions of), so he took an exit and stared back at my car from the side.

If you redlined your car may still be ok.

Don't engage such people in the future man. Not worth it. Haters will hate.

ok so 3 things over here:
1- you must have made it to Niagara pretty fast driving 200k for few minutes
2- your wife was scared of a GTI driver trying to instigate you to race but was ok with you driving 200k's on a busy highway?
3- on that highway at 150K you risk losing your car, license suspended, plus 10,000$ fine, was it really worth it not to mention the fact you would've ruined your trip.

Yes your right about the fine and loosing the license and all that, but when your in a situation that the other guy doesn't leave you alone, what choice do you have other than loosing him. If I slowed down he would've slowed down too, the guy was nuts. What if he had a weapon? Too many crazy people out there these day. I wasn't gonna take a chance with him....

True that. It was never my intention to engage him. I have better things to do than engaging idiots, but at the time the only viable option was to lose him, but now that I think back, I definitely could have gotten a big ticket and lose the car for a while too. Can't win either way

I am going to turn on my hazard warning lights next time and move over to a slow lane and let the lunatic go away.

I have been doing that (without the slowing down part) when people tailgate for no reason. At least sends a signal to them that I can't move over due to traffic or just back off if u are sensible even one little bit.

Glad u are safe though without Tickets or so. Don't worry about the car, should be cool
