luckily my car had warranty, BMW took it in and replaced the unit.

I have had this several times. HU and screen changes don't help. Seems to be an iDrive bug BMW can't fix.

I have had this happen twice in 8 months. The iDrive just resets itself. Super weird.

FWIW, 2 years of daily use here and no reboots or no signal messages....sure is strange to see some people run into it on a semi-routine basis even if it just occurs a few times a year for some.

There is a puma case for this issue. You're options are to get the car reprogrammed. If the problem persists, a new Head Unit is required.
