so I have been driving my car for about 2 weeks now so I'm still new to the feeling and shifting points and downshifts etc.

Now my question is how smooth are your guys transmission on the f30s
8 speed AT

I feel mine a little jumpy at times when it's downshifting on its own even on comfort mode doesn't really bother me I just want to see if that's normal or maybe it's not normal ..

and also on sports mode manual in each gear the car has a jump to it like the gear kicks in pretty hard

Like I said maybe it's normal since I'm not used to it

I have read and the say the trans is super fast on gears so maybe it is normal

give me your guys feed back on your guys 8speed AT of how smooth your guys are or if is the same that way I won't too much about it or get it checked out

Oh another thing at WOT the gears are super super smooth and super fast I love it lol

i am by no means an expert on cars or anything but what you have described is very similar to me. during slow accelerations(sport mode) the shifts are pretty choppy, like someone who is not very good at driving a manual car, but when i floor it i really FLY and have lightning fast shifts. I have rwd btw

At 2k miles, I'm still getting used to mine. You definitely feel the jerk at slow speeds and smooth throttle - usually when you don't expect it. And the shifts at smooth acceleration feel like a driver that doesn't know how to use their clutch (brief loss of power, followed by crazy - unexpected for those speeds - torque/pull). This is the nature of this transmission which connects you perfectly to the engine at full power and performs flawlessly at 5k-7.5k RPM. I realized that I can't have both the Toyota ridiculous smoothness and the BMW sportiness. It's the nature of this beast which provides the optimum connection to the awesome engine.

My tranny definitely broke-in and smoothed out with use, downshifts in particular. Manual downshifts into second at 40 mph used to sometimes chirp the rear tires, even with the rev match!

made me chuckle, bad and wrong on so many levels lol.

Back to OP.

I believe with the 335i and AT it is a little choppy / unsure at times but when banging on the power it's almost psychic.

With the 6 pot Diesels the 8AT is sublime, very smooth both up and down gears.

Although setting it to Sport does make a little too responsive at times for in town driving.

All in all I love the setup.

The 8AT transmission downshifts more often than any other vehicle I have ever driven. Auto trans of course. It is so sensitive to speed changes it becomes noticeable.
However it does that to always have you in the correct gear of the power curve with abundant torque in reserve.
Other vehicles leave you in a higher gear and you have to wait for the downshift to accelerate. The F30 8AT already has you there!
You are more aware of the downshift while slowing because less intelligent cars are lazy and stupid.
You will soon appreciate the downshifts when you realize the car is. Indeed psychic.
Any Honda can keep you in Drive all day but try to pass someone and wait for the gear.

Future technology changes to the 'auto system' make it even more psychic.

It will have input from GPS mapping, also from ACC so that as soon as you indicate to over take, it pre shifts ready to over take.

The trans also has a break in period. Over time, usually after a month it will start to adapt to your driving patterns and shift accordingly.

IIRC the shifts are faster in sport mode. This is normal. The problem occurs when you're driving style is more conducive to Comfort mode.

Diesels are less likely to have this feeling because they respond slower and the AT is programmed accordingly.

Could you expand on Diesels respond slower?

Diesel fuels burns slower so it builds revs slower.

Also diesel engines have among other differences more rotational mass so they loose revs at a slower rate between shifts.

Yes but diesels respond faster from start than the BMW petrols.

Correct..They'll give you that initial jump because of the torque.

Well not just initial when you compare 335d / 330d Xdrive etc.

As in the 335 is the quickest out of the 3 series.

Guys, let me explain it simply. The reason you have rough shifts in lower RPM is because of where the car hits peak Torque. As our cars hits peak torque low in the RPM range the transmission is dealing with transfering that torque to the next gear. As you go up the RPM range torque drops and HP takes over of which when you shift higher in the RPM range you will feel less herky jerky. If you tune the car it will feel even MORE as the torque is kicked up a notch. Personally I like it feels like a sports car.

don't get me wrong you guys I'm in love of the trans compared to the the e90 6 AT

it was just curiosity that I had since I'm still getting used to the car

at one point I felt the e90 faster but now that I'm driving the f30 and punching it here and there it's way faster now I feel the difference no doubt about it

Thanks for all the inputs 👌👌👌

What do you guys think of a gthaus exhuast ?

Perfectly smooth in Comfort mode, quite choppy in Sport, due to the high torque. Normal, it's just a powerful car.

There definitely is a break-in period for the auto transmission in these cars as others have mentioned above. The first couple thousands miles I the car shifted far too quickly for me when accelerating and it felt choppy. This problem seemed to go away after 3000 miles and its amazing now.

Compared to the SMG M3 I came from, this tranny shifts like a dream.

It's worth nothing here the transmission will adapt to your driving style, and if you drive it like a grandma all the time it will get used to slow shifting and if you drive like a maniac all the time it will get used to quick shifting which might then feel weird at low speeds.

Not true in mine, at least not in manual mode, little smoother in AUTO.

Put it in SPORT and rev it up into the 4k range and pull that paddle and the car shudders as the "gear" is slammed into place. They are harsh gear shifts to be sure, I like it though.

How does that jive with the break-in period? I plan to not use Sport mode too much during break in to keep the RPMs down.

Or does everyone else ignore the break-in period?
