That M50d will not replace the M5!
It will be a very very good engine with a power superior to audi's and merc's v8 diesels, but with a better fuel consumption and lighter, of course!
It will be under the hood of 7 series (named 750d probably), 5 series/ 5 series GT/6 series + X5 and X6!
This engine is developed especially for european market due to the fact that big petrol engines have very small sales here:
1L of benzin cost here between 1,5 to 1,8 USD!
1 US galon has 3,785 L, so the minimum price per 1 galon of benzin cost in Europe 5,6775 USD.
With this engine released, BMW shows to everyone its high end technology in developing great engines!

Why no Diesel ///M? I am not against. But I think it would be better to call it ///D5, ///D for ///Dieselsport. And what about Porsche having diesel engines? It also seams the next 911 998 will also get a Diesel Flat 6. Audi wanted to build the R8 V12 TDI, and finally put the engine into the Q7. Before Audi also wanted to build near the S4 and RS4 a DS4. And if BMW M GmbH build diesels, maybe Audi will go back, well it cannot be called DS4 anymore, because of the Citröen DS4. Lamborghini, as owned by Audi may also get diesel engines, at least in the Estoque. And Mercedes had the C 220 CDI AMG. They will surely build other diesel AMG. I wish you good luck finding a car maker not doing any diesel sportcars. I do not see anything exept Ferrari.
I do not care if BMW M does diesel cars until they continue with petrol ones. If considered history, image and all that than I would have not to like the 911 GT3 RS.
