Sexy. It's always hard to tell what cars sound like in videos, but if that's representative of what you hear in the cockpit, I'd probably pay for this.

I would pay to get rid of the ASD if I had it.
I passed cards in the spokes phase a few years ago.

Can't you just code it off?

Personally I'd rather have the option to tailor what I hear and when.

EDIT: I missed the "if I had it."

I'm conflicted about it. I think the problem I have is that it's a loss of distinction. It's software, which everyone can have (You too can sound like you're driving a BMW) vs paying for the hardware that brings that unique sound.

Still, would rather have the option.

Where did you place the ASD module? How does it connect to the factory AMP? Is it a pass-through setup from the AMP to the speakers or...?

It connects between the head unit and the amp. I don't have a amp from factory as our base audio in South Africa comes without an amp. US spec cars come with Hi-Fi sound as standard. You will manually have to connect 22 individual wires to your amp's wiring harness. I tried to get a harness from technic, but he couldn't or wouldn't help.

Now to find someone on this board who claims they don't like/need ASD and buy the module from them

For the base HiFi on the F30, the factory amp is located on the left side of the trunk/boot just under the recessed cubby hole on top of a metal bracket mounted to the trunk/boot floor. The ASD amp is mounted to that same bracket adjacent to the factory amp (see pic). For the base HiFi system the flow is:

HU -> ASD -> Factory AMP -> speakers

Actually, from what i understand, without ASD in front of the HiFi amp, the stereo doesn't work. You can't take it out even though you don't want the ASD engine sounds. Its in series with the amp. Its too bad though... because i'd love to see them put their money where their mouth is

Do you happen to know the part number for the wiring harness from the ASD module to the Hi-Fi amp from your upgrade? Thanks.

Are you sure? I've read posts by some folks on this board that claim to have unplugged the ASD to get rid of the sound.

I don't think they physically removed the ASD unit itself. They probably disabled it at the REM or equivalent, but heard if you do that, it will still disable the audio system. But I've never done that myself, so ...

The way most people disable it now is to code it out. That's what i do when i want to disable it

I want to code it out as well.

Do you know what I need to code?

There's a couple of ways to do it. One intentional, and the other one probably unintentional.

The intentional way is to do HU_NBT [3000] ASD_SOUND_OFF = aktiv (default is nicht_aktiv). I have not done it this way myself, so maybe someone can verify ...

I usually just set my engine type to one of the ones that are not supported, e.g. ASD [3000] ASD-Configuration - Funktionen - Baureihe to F021 - i know this way works for sure

Sounds deadening material kills road noise but also kills engine noise. So they play engine noise through the speakers so you can still enjoy the engine sound without all the nasty road noise. I like it actually. Some don't but i think its a good system.

Right, but there are several approaches to this problem. 1 is what BMW does and uses the car speakers to augment/enhance the engine noise via a simulated or recorded engine noise. The other is to just enhance the actual engine note by pumping it straight into the car, bypassing the sound deadening materials.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...ined-tech-dept

I think my worry with BMW's type of system is my car sounds 'good' as long as my speakers are working.

I know the e90 platform never had this. But it has a similar head unit to amp setup.

Is it possible? Would be cool just to see how it sounds.

Im always up for a diy retrofit!

Here's the work that Lexus and Yamaha codeveloped to pump the engine noise into the cabin of the LFA and relay as much feedback about what the engine was doing to the driver as possible:

http://www.yamaha.com/news_release/2009/20091021.html

That's what real engineering work looks like.

BMW's solution? Just play some synthesized audio through the speakers!

I just think it's a silly gimmick that has further diluted the driving experience. It's all way too simulated for my taste and that's something BMW should have left as an option. If you want your car to sound mean go for an exhaust and at least get some performance gains. If you really want to make a statement I would download the soundtrack of a tesla. Get yourself a nice electric whine at 15000 rpm now that would be cool.
