Rear dash rattle

I've been getting this rattle coming from the back. Its a stiff plastic-y rattle.

I tried to ignore it but it's been getting worse. Rattles on lane changes and bumpy roads.

What I've investigated so far:
-The child seat anchor covers: they are made of hard plastic and there is a tiny bit of play when closed, but i tapped with my finger around the area and it does not seem to be coming from those covers.
-Third brake light: I got the car tinted so I assumed the broke a clip up there, but I pulled it back down and checked it out. Everything seems fine. The clips seemed loose so I put tape between them to cut down on the play. The LED bar thats inside the housing does rattle when I tapped on the TBL housing. I ended up wedging a small ziptie between the bracket that was holding the LED bar in place. I was able to get ride of all rattles from the TBL. However, the rattle still exists after I put everything back.

When tapping in the corners of the rear ceiling the I can hear the rattle but cant pin-point where exactly it's coming from. Literally driving me nuts! Lmao...

Is there a DIY on removing the rear dash? I'd like to do more investigation.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 2017 340i (if it matters for anything)

TLDR: rattle from the rear dash. Tried a few things, but didn't work. Please link DIY on rear dash removal for further investigation.

SOLUTION FOUND:

I found out what was cause the noise. My cousin had thrown her bag into my trunk and it hit the clip that is meant to hold the floor liner up so you can access the compartment underneath.
It was the hard plastic vibrating against metal on certain bumps that was causing the noise.

I slipped a piece of tap between the two and problem solved.

There is another thread about the rear map light assembly rattle- I have it and it sounds like what you’re describing. See the other thread, supposedly a pain to try to DIY😤

It's likely the rear shelf... this is really common. Just take it to BMW and have them add felt tape to all of the contact points. It fixed mine.

I have this as well especially when listening to music loud. I assume it is the rear child seat anchors and have planned to use foam or tape to eliminate it. Must be a really common issue.

The anchor points didnt seem to be the problem for me, but i did initially think that was the case. Sound seems closer down toward the base of the glass

Interesting, I'll bring it up next time I'm in service.
Did they mention exactly where/what was making the noise?
Thank you

I have the same issue, it happens more in the winter months. I just learned to ignore it, it's kinda disappointing thou, my wife MB C300 don't have any noises and it's older.

How difficult is the rear shelf to remove and install felt tape oneself?

I had the same problem on my 2017 340i. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it right away (warranty). Apparently there are spacers that keep pressure on the rear deck lid, the factory didn't put enough spacers causing it to move around and rattle.

I had a rattle from the rear deck as well. Bothered me for the longest time and couldn't figure it out from inside the cabin until one day I popped the trunk and started tapping the bottom of the rear deck from inside the trunk. Found the source of the rattle to be a loose screw in the center of the deck. Tightened it with my hand and sound never came back again.

Don't know if this is your issue but might be worth a quick try?
