I'm really missing the car, lovely weather today and I can't go out and enjoy that glorious 6 cylinder noise

I could go out driving in mine, record all the lovely noises and send the video footage over to you perhaps?
Hope you get it all sorted quickly, however, what's interesting BMW must have received a serious number of these cases by now but they just keep happening all over again!

I'd appreciate the sound file, I can play it over the stereo in the loan 118d whilst I'm driving around
I'd say the number of cars suffering from the noise is still relatively low when you consider how many cars have the 8 speed box fitted.

You can fix it so the 118d works just like the M135i by following this simple 2 step process...

1) Code the ASD on the 118d to sound like an M135i and change the startup logo on the display to say M135i so you think you're in your car. Just doing this will also add 50 bhp.

2) Put the gearbox in Sport mode and pretend you're just driving the M135i in Eco-Pro.

Job done

PS: Don't forget when you get to the pumps to use the black nozzle and not the green one though.

OK, so the dealer called today, they are giving me daily updates without any prompting which is impressive. Someone from BMW is visiting my car on Thursday 28th to witness the noise and download some data etc, here's hoping a software fix may sort it. I don't hold much hope of that so looks like she will be with the dealer for a while. On a positive the dealer is locating a M135i they registered in December for me to use so hopefully I'll be back in a M135i before the end of the week.

Good service which is what you expect, at least you don't have to chase them up!

Fingers crossed for the right outcome! It does sound like they've dealt with many similar cases before.

Today BMW UK are looking at my car, test driving it and taking some information from it. I assume they will also try and see if the noise can be altered with software as two updates have been applied to the box in production since my car was built in Dec 2015.
The dealer so far is doing everything right, my point of contact Sam is spot on. Her updates are precise and she appreciated I was driving a 118d as a loan car so yesterday a M235i was dropped off at work for me to use. I’m loving the M235i apart from the suspension, it’s a passive system and the difference between it and my adaptive M135i is night and day. The road to work is a reasonable surface but has lots of undulations, the 2 is all over the place where as the 1 is much more planted and forgiving. I find a good test for a cars suspension is the A50 between Uttoxeter and Sudbury, the 118d M-sport on passive suspension and run flats was terrible, violently bouncing up and down at speeds over 50mph. The 2 on MPSS is better but still unsettled where my 1 on MPSS and adaptive is spot on. I know people debate about whether passive or adaptive is better, all I can say is the adaptive for moderate to quick(ish) everyday driving is the way to go. However, one plus point for the passively damper cars is the lack of suspension noise at low speed over potholes and speed bumps. Ever adaptive car I’ve driven, 1 and 3 series makes some sort of noise whereas the passive cars seem silent in this respect. I’s love to try a passive car on aftermarket springs / dampers from AC or Birds for example.

Interesting comparison.

I take it the M235i hasnt got any of the issues your car has got? So you know what the car should be like?

Have they indicated yet what would be needed to rectify the issue?
A new gearbox I guess?

Dont worry car will come back better than you expected after the gearbox change and see it in this way you dont know there was a GB change. This issue could have popped up before it left the factory during a quality check and if it was changed you wouldnt have known it. But try to push for a new replacement as the car is just a month old.

But atleast the dealership has responded very well to the situation than making you go back and forth and ask them for a estimated completion time of the work

I'd not be happy with that, and I would seek to reject it to be honest. That's a major failure!

If you do accept the repair, please do it without prejudice to your right to reject at a later time (if further problems come up).

The dealer so far is being excellent and have already been on the phone regarding a replacement vehicle. I've expressed an interest in a manual M135i which they together with BMW UK are looking into. I have lost faith in these 8 speed autos which is a shame. In the meantime I'm enjoying the M235i
