Nav Update for my 2012 F30
Guys,
Why do I have to pay for an update to my Nav system? This is the email I just got:

To me this is absolutely ridiculous!
I really hate my current nav as its wrong 70% of the time. I really wanted an update that would also let me know a new route should there be something wrong with the current one I'm on...something like real-time-traffic update... My old Garmin used to do this...but not a BMW?

every manufacturer charges for navigation updates... It sucks yes, but par for the course. They have to license the maps from the providers, and they pas that cost (and probably a profit as well) on to you.

My rule of thumb is to purchase every OTHER year's updates. Depending on how much you use POI data, of course, but in general, there's not that many updates to your local area in one year's time.

I just got my maps updated for free from 2012 to 2013-A.
It's part of a recall. Go to your dealer, have them run a report on your VIN, I'll bet your F30 qualifies. |

that's why we want to use our iOS, Android, WinMo8 maps to be used on the gorgeous F30 screen 6.5 or 8.8 inch. Bring them on, ah think forward let us stream music via bluetooth and stream maps on the screen too. I'll pay $199 if car manufacturer implement this feature. Free update anytime for the map from Google!

I actually never use the navi to search for any address/POI. Just use the BMW Remote app on the phone to do a "google search" for the place and send it to your car using the app. In the car, go to messages (for me it is shortcut key 1) and pull up that address and use the car's navigation from there onwards.
This way I could stagger the map updates to about once in 3 years. The main drawback is that, using this approach it is more cumbersome to enter a destination "while" you are driving. However, in most cases, I plan ahead and send the destination to my car from my phone or laptop - Nothing can beat google's POI |

And very few updates are made to the streets anyway, the only thing better about Google or Apple maps is that they change the UI and have good POI's. Like you, that's not something I rely on iDrive to do. That's why the BMW remote app is so good. |

I recall that early production 2013 cars (before Nov production) were getting map update to 2013-A at no charge.

I encourage others to check their VIN with BMW because this is a fairly recent TSB. I had my car serviced a few months back and it wasn't on my status sheet. Looked to BMW to buy a key case from parts two weeks ago and they ran my VIN and said I had a recall and that recall was the conversion from 2012 to 2013-A. The maps have more detail, the street names at 800ft birdseye show up more often, exit ramp accuracy is better, and the glitch at restart (not remembering last state) is corrected. The downside is that some routes to destinations I've traveled have changed, sometimes iDrive nav wants to take me a different way. |
