I noticed that some of you blokes don't seem to like us very much, curious why that is.

I got 39 mpg US on a 2000 mile trip with Eco Pro on most of the time. I wanted to see how it would do and give it a chance. In comfort mode I took the same trip and got 34 mpg US. I think the difference is slower throttle response and the coasting feature in Eco Pro. Going across Nevada on Interstate 80 there are some passes to go up and down. Coasting on the down slopes was pretty cool. Now that I've competed that mileage comparison, I mostly don't use Eco Pro anymore. |

Yeah I grew up in Surrey and there's plenty of banter between the North and South of England!
I detected the sarcasm in the post... don't mess with a Geordie though!

Done almost 400 miles today on eco-pro, mainly motorway with some a roads and start;stop traffic. Stuck at 70-75 on the motorway and averaged almost 56mpg for the whole trip.
Car is a 320d f31. Reg march 1st, coming up to 2700miles. According to the 'extra miles per tank's thing i got 99miles and still have a third of a tank left(with a range of 220 miles). That's pretty good IMO. I should be on target for over 600 miles to this tank. |

Back to the OP's original question.
I have a 320d auto and I find there is no difference at all in the economy at a steady speed in either eco or comfort. You can see on the Sport Displays when you switch between the modes the displays still show the same power and torque output and I assume there is no difference in the fuel being used by the engine. I find comfort is more economical on a run than eco pro if the air con and seats are off. I think this is because when in eco pro the car is slow to accelerate and you tend to use more throttle to keep up with the traffic flow or maintain your speed on inclines. With comfort the throttle response is better which I find allows me more control and I am able to maintain my speed with smaller throttle inputs which I feel gives a small gain in economy. |

Eco pro does seem to make savings on the two cars I've had it on. A pre-LCI 330d 8At and a LCI 340i 8AT with the coast function.
In the 340i I did a bit of an experiment driving home from three consecutive back shifts in similar conditions with clear roads... I got 29mpg in Sport, 30mpg in comfort and 32mpg in Eco. However, I drove to the driving mode and did not use cruise control in Eco and obeyed the blue foot and coasted where possible. To balance the above, I've driven all the way home moderately in Sport mode when there has been light traffic and achieved 33mpg... In heavy traffic I achieved 22mpg in Comfort/Eco. Also, last weekend we went to visit the in-laws. 120 miles each way. The 340i has done this twice with winter (square) 18" rubber in reasonable conditions and achieved 37-38mpg in Comfort mode. Last weekend in very wet conditions we were running early so I did the run in Eco mode as I was in no rush and was playing a bit of a coasting game... <34mpg going down in heavy rain but running (staggered) 19" summer rubber. The weather cleared for the return and we drove home on in comfort with a bit of sport and got >36mpg. All mpg' are car OBC, I can't remember the full numbers. I was struck at the time that heavy rain gave a 10% hit to mpg. I've never seen this so significantly in previous Saloons, maybe it's a vortex thing with dense wet spray saturated air and the greater vortex behind the Touring?... Basically, Eco does make a difference. But, it's very difficult to control out the other factors to demonstrate it in real use. Now, under laboratory testing... Well, you get nice tax brackets... In real world conditions there are so many other factors much more significant than Eco Pro. But, it will contribute. Or, it's a tool for alleviating the boredom of a long slow trudge if nothing else.

You can drive to the same economy in comfort mode as EcoPro but you don't get the numbed throttle and you just need to be concious of feathering the throttle in comfort mode, as EcoPro adds visible tips/reminders on the dash

Drove home last night on my 24 mile commute and got home with 49.2mpg showing. Would have been over 50mpg if I hadn't got stuck on the M25 exit slip
Not bad for a 328i (petrol) However you really have to concentrate and be extremely light footed to get that and Eco-Pro is no fun at all, usually I just drive normally in Comfort and get around 40mpg for the same journey |

Does seem a shame to have to drive a powerful car so carefully, otherwise it would cripple me! Oh, and pretty much driving it everywhere in Eco Pro, apart from the occasional blast in Sport. |

I actually prefer the stranglehold mode sometimes. In the mornings my journey is clear on 20 miles of Vector camera regulated road. At 50mph in cruise I get at least 5 miles out of the eco mode. I only use comfort on longer journeys and motorways.
On my 435d with eco I have seen 28 extra miles to the tank and without it I would say around 10. It's possible to baby the throttle in comfort and be somewhat economical. Last edited by Soul_Glo; 04-01-2017 at 12:17 AM.. |
