Rust...not the seats

I popped my hood today and noticed some small rust spots developing on my brand new 335i. Car has less than 1000 miles on it. Is this "normal"? I emailed the pics to my service advisor to send to BMW. I am beginning to think the whole car is going to start rusting soon!

This is ridiculous. I just ordered one. If this happens to my car, I'll lose it.

I just replied to the sales manager's email asking how my buying experience went and told him I bought a rusting $55k car. I plan on calling BMW again tomorrow. They still haven't replied about the seat frames and hinges and it has been over a week since I brought the car in for them to take pictures.

are you sure its rust? in the second picture it kind of looks like cosmoline

its hard to tell in pictures however, it almost looks like water from other rusted metal dripped on the metal in your bay.

if it is rust, raise hell. under the seats, rust, OK yeah it sucks. but in your engine bay, not acceptable.

Exactly, what I told them. Seat issues are one thing, engine bay another. Pretty sure it is rust but will find out more tomorrow.

Strange that it is there, but looks like the surface has had some contaminated water or liquid on it, appears to have puddled and stained as it dried. It doesn't look like rust from under the surface, it will wipe off if I'm seeing it right.

How it got there would be more a concern to me, but it should just wipe or polish away. If it was my car that's what I'd do as a matter of course.

It does not wipe away. I have tried.

Does it look as if it is eating into the surface paint, as the rest of the structure looks perfectly normal? I still feel something has been on the surface since production of the car.

I know pictures don't show exact detail, but it does appear to have had liquid of some type on the surfaces and there looks to be evidence of run off.

I just spent some time under the hood. It looks like you are right. Good eye! It doesn't wipe off but I can peel it off. It happened in the factory. It is in spots that aren't exposed to drip directly onto it. My salesman is really good. We have been emailing and he said it is a lubricant that they use in the factory. Not sure what I want to use to get it off....a degreaser?

So it could be cosmoline... has it dropped out of the hood? Have a look to see if there is evidence of it doing so.

It it is, it should come off with something like white spirit.

It didn't come from the hood. I peeled off the areas that are accessible. Just glad it wasn't rust!

Looks like rail dust that got wet and puddled in those spots. I'm guessing the PDI wasn't as thorough as it should have been.

thats cosmoline. you'll need to use a solvent to remove it, off the top of my head, 90+% isopropyl or denatured alcohol should do it. if you need to get more aggressive, laquer thinner.

I agree it looks like cosmoline. That stuff is still leaking onto my headlights and the car is almost 12 months old.
