Auto Headlights ... Won't turn off!

Hi all,

When I switch my headlights to auto (not the high beam assist), I've noticed on a few occasions that the low beam lights also come on and just stay on. Today it was blue sky and sunny but it seems my car disagrees.

Anyone know if there is a setting or just the way it is?

Thanks.

I think there is a thread on the main forum discussing this. Theory is the car knows when the sun is low on the horizon and switches lights on.

That might be, but in the cars defence, the sun is hardly high in the sky even at 13:00 in the UK this time of year.

On my E90, they came on about 1ish in the afternoon. I love my auto lights and the sensor seems to be absolutely fine...I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

My old X1 used to do this so am guessing it is a feature.

It was lovely blue sky around 13:00 (around the M25). Anyway I ended up switching off auto. Also is it me or do the LED rings dim when the xenon lights are on?

With the Xenons the LED rings are part of the DRL's so they dim down on turning the sidelights or low beams on

I'm not far from the M25 (but I suppose it does cover a large area) and we had torrential downpours at around half 2

I think it depends whether you are driving into the sun as the sensor is on the windscreen. I went out of lunch today at 11:30am, clear blue sky and the sun was shining but I noticed the auto lights were on. Going back to work 45 minutes later driving into the sun they were off.
