We've spied the upcoming 3 series F31 touring again, but this time we get a look at it against the outgoing 3 series E91 touring model. As one can see, the two share similar rooflines and tailgate shapes. However, the F31's tailgate appears more sculpted, extending out to a more pronounced trunk lip than the E91. The F31's roof spoiler is also flatter than the E91 roof spoiler, giving the F31 roofline a sleeker shape near the C pillar.

The F31's side character line is also deeper and longer, extending all the way into the tail lights, unlike the E91's which ends before reaching the side of the tail lights.

Reviewed together with the F31 rear design patent CGIs (images below), little is left to the imagination as to what the final F31 design is, despite the minimal camouflage still remaining.

The next 3 series touring / wagon is expected to make its debut at the AMI auto show in Leipzig in early June.

The F31 has been confirmed to be making a return to the North American market. In an interview we had at the 2012 NAIAS with Paul Ferraiolo, Manager, Product Planning & Strategy of BMWNA, he confirmed to us that the next generation F31 3 series touring will once again make it stateside.

Now if BMW NA would bring it over in 335i xDrive spec (and M Sport trim), I'd seriously consider it. But I'm sure they will only offer it as the 328 and then wonder why it doesn't sell in larger numbers. I'd but my order in today if they would offer the 550i xDrive wagon... but am not expecting that to happen.

not in my book it doesn't. E91 always looked narrow and tall. Disproportionate.

The F31 looks much more balanced.

I like it. When

I really like it when it has shadow line trim. I hate it with chrome, that would be a deal breaker.

Mmake mine a M-sport and we have a deal today!

I never get tired of seeing F31 spy shots! I'm anxiously anticipating the official unveiling in June. Even the tow hitch appears excited...

I prefer the F31 to the E91, but the E90 to the F30. Dunno why...

Can't wait to see the M Sport. The regular front end of the F30/31 just looks too flat.

I don't see why most people like the f31. The e91 looks more tighter and the overall shape is more proportioned.

I also noticed the trim difference- I think it's one car with different trim on each side. however- see my review of the F30- I doubt it's shadow line trim, more likely just cheap looking black plastic

I've come to like the F30 sedans look, but this just doesn't do it for me. I love the E91 but IMHO this is butt ugly

F31 looks great - i welcome the new rear tails.
hopefully stateside they'll include a 335 version.
or it's gonna be a well tuned 4 banger on some heavy metal.

+1, for some strange reason. On another note, I wouldn't have a big problem with the new N20 engine being the only offering, as it has narrowed the gap in performance while offering a big plus in gas mileage.

One thing that I wish BMW would do is offer the F31 sunroof as an option, not standard. This was one of the deal-breakers for me on the E91, as the big roof was heavy, unattractive to my eye, and put all that extra weight where it was least welcome. Big sunroof just means big problems down the road. I asked on this forum about sunroof delete, but was given some horse-hockey excuse about crash testing, etc.

Keep the options light and the price down, as they won't sell many wagons if they all come in at $50k+.
