Grinding noise from rear
Anyone know what a grinding noise from the rear right hand wheel could be?
Its linked to the wheel as its a recurring noise with a cyclical grinding noise. I thought it was brake pads rubbing but after a good run the noise was there still. Im thinking rear wheel bearing? |

My car makes a noise from the rear left tire when turning slightly to the left. When going straight it doesn't do it. Also noticed that it's more prevalent after having released the ebrake. Haven't checked it out in detail and am hoping it's just a lose ebrake cable.

Trapped grit really does sound the most likely culprit. What I would do myself... Depending on your type of wheel and the access it gives (or take the wheel off) try pushing all around the disc guard either side from top to bottom with a suitable tool/stick - it is thin metal so doesn't need much force - try not to misshape it although it won't really hurt as you can bend it back. Hopefully the stone will just drop out when you get to the bottom or you will at least hear something is there. If you are not comfortable with this then just pop to your local tyre shop and they should sort it quickly & cheaply + if it is a bearing (unlikely I would have thought) or something more expensive then you are also in the right place for it to be diagnosed - getting a stubborn bit of grit trapped does happen and depending on the shape of it it may not be possible to shift it any other way than this/stroke removing the disc.

Have you jacked that wheel up to check if the noise happens when spinning the wheel by hand. Take the wheel off and you should be able to pinpoint the source better.
Could be something stuck in the handbrake shoe area. |

To the OP. From the sounds of it, I think I had this exact same issue on my front right wheel. The reason was that there was a build up of rust on the inside of the brake disc near the centre that wasn’t covered by the swept area. The calliper was rubbing against it but failed to fully remove it when driving. The noise was loudest when moving off with the windows down then got slightly quieter throughout the journey but still remained. If this sounds like your issue then I’d check the inside of the disc.
To solve this, I got both my front discs and pads replaced, but you probably won’t have to if you have some way of removing the rust. After replacement the noise was still there very faintly when moving off but was due to a normal build up rust when stationary and dissapeared after 2 mins driving, which to me verifies that that was the cause. Edit: Ah sorry I just saw you solved it and it was a tyre. Well hopefully this might help someone else. |
