The #3 question I get asked is a twofer—how do I get the great color and images that look so sharp? The answer is so simple, yet it’s not. The key ingredient that makes both color look more vibrant and your images sharper—is black. Yep, that one simple, yet vital color works all that magic, and so much more. Ever wanted to make your images more vibrant in post and turned to Levels, bringing that slider a little to the left, punching up the blacks? How about sharpening in post using Unsharp Mask, which adds a little black to the edge of a pixel? What’s working that magic in both of these post solutions? The addition of black! How can you work this magic at the camera?

Underexposure! Yep, that’s it, that’s the secret, that’s what I’ve been using for thirty years to punch up colors and trick the eye into thinking my images are sharper than they really are. It’s really hard to believe that this little thing can make such an impact, but it does. I can guarantee that all the photos you’re seeing here or on my website were underexposed a minimum of -1/3, and up to -3 stops. My “zero,” as it were, is -1/3. I underexposed my film as I do my digital, with it all having the exact same effect on the photographs and the viewer’s eye.

This ought to stir up Dave.
I do like having it on the left and adding black to my pictures.

really depends on what sorts of editing you plan to do.

Straight out of the camera, underexposed is going to look better, no doubt about it.

But shooting to the right actually give you more colours to play with, and then when you get it on the computer at home, you just under expose it. So in a sense, this is correct, but when on the computer, there's more information and control to work with and have complete control over.

at least when this guy was underexposing with film, he could recover things easier to make them brighter. Not as easy with digital on a technical level. Once you lose the colours in digital, they are gone, so you may as well shoot the way that gives you the most flexibility.

I would appreciate it if you stream content as opposed to trying to download/saving it. The videos should be compatible with iOS, but I haven't tried Android.

Also, if there is any content you'd like to share with others, or content you would like to see, let me know via PM.

Let me know if you run into any issues. Finally, thanks to Reed for sharing some of the videos. I will be updating the website with more videos, documents, etc over the next couple weeks.

Enjoy.
Applause, Applause....great job Chewy! I have a couple of things I have DL'd over the last year you might able to add...I will PM you later about them.

Really? There are some really good candid photo's in there IMHO. And it IS CNN's award right? So wouldn't you expect to see these pictures in the news?

touche...

yeah, there's definitely some decent candid shots. But I'm not going to say anything like "best photographer of the year" on them. However, since you pointed out it's CNN specific, then yes, there would definitely be a competition.

I was just looking at it in the wrong light, so to speak.

ps, who were the voters?

I have just added over 5 hours of additional videos in the bottom section of the page. Days 6-10 of the series will be added by the end of the weekend. Enjoy.

Search for some video of the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II, and I found this non- english one. Shows the difference between the new and the old.

I *hate* the USPS. Worst way ever to ship anything besides a letter. I ordered a 7D (yay) on Thursday and contacted the seller to see if we could arrange UPS shipping. He said it had already shipped from the warehouse in OH. So I finally got a tracking number and found out it shipped from Flushing, NY, not OH. And since Thursday it has made it from Flushing, NY to Bethpage, NY, which is an hour drive. I'll be lucky to see it by Friday.
