Can you update to newer iDrive?
I have a 2014 328GT and am wondering if I can update the iDrive software. Current install is stock. Would like to update to a newer version that includes Apple CarPlay. I spoke with a tech at the dealership and he said it voids warranty and they likely wouldn't perform the work, so I'm wondering if I could do it on my own.
Has anyone tried this upgrade? Did you go through a dealership or do so yourself? Do you need to replace the hardware for it to run effectively (e.g. no lag)? Costs? I'd appreciate any thoughts/recommendations. Thanks! - Mike

I spoke with a BMW genius just now and he gave me the following details:
2014 328GT has iDrive 4.2 2016 production year 7-series was first with iDrive 5.0, featuring CarPlay All 2017 model year vehicles produced after Aug/Sep 2016 have iDrive 5.0 iDrive 4.2 and 5.0 have the same screen and dial, only the underlying hardware is different All 2018 production year vehicles have iDrive 6.0 which features a touchscreen and larger screen (10.2") BMW dealerships will not perform the upgrade, only updates within current system (e.g. 4.1 to 4.2) He had heard of people upgrading from 4.2 to 5.0 without changing the hardware but didn't know about performance He said one option was to a junkyard and pull the underlying hardware to replace but he didn't know about the installation to prepare the new iDrive for current vehicle Has anyone tried using the current hardware and upgraded from 4.2 to 5.0? Has anyone tried replacing the underlying hardware to upgrade? Thanks!

Look in the media forum under NBT EVO retrofits.
People have actually tried flashing EVO software onto NEXT hardware but I think the hardware isn't powerful enough. It is possible to switch between them such as HU Basic to HU Pro for example. However it requires coding and / or FSC codes. However this brings its own problems.... |

You might as well be asking if you can update your i8 phone to function the same as an i10 phone. You can, by going to the Apple store, trading in the i8 for an i10. The same answer applies here. Typically if a change is software only it would go from x.1 to x.2, whereas a change from 4.x to 5.x indicates different hardware.

How do you check your version?
I've got a 2014 F34, and had the dealer replace the sunroof switch and check the Hatch switch, as both were acting up. They told me they initialized the switch, but it was more than that. Aside from all of my coding going away, Slight changes to the UI and options, subtle color differences, etc. Parts of the interface (side screen options, for instance) look just like they did on the 2019 X3 loaner I had. I got a newer version, and it's the same or very similar to the 2019 X3. I have the pro nav, and had 2019-1 NA NEXT maps when I took it in. |

The Answer to Upgrading Apple Car Play?
The best way to determine this is to call BMW Genius at 844-443-6487 to see if your car has met certain requirements. My car meets the software requirements and it *would* have worked fine *IF* it was factory installed but that option was not chosen so I did not get it and I'm told I cannot b/c of certain hardware I do not have. I too would like to upgrade to Apple Car Play in my 2017 330i GT and was told that the following are requirements:
1. Must have a mfr date of Aug 2016 or later (2017 models and newer are supported https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/) 2. Must have Navigation 3. Must have one of the following - a. Wireless Charging, b. Enhanced USB and Bluetooth, or c. Smartphone Integration / Enhanced Bluetooth. If all three of these requirements have been met, then the dealership can upgrade you for around $300 (https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...lityMatrix.pdf) However, has anyone purchased this USB flash software from an offshore company that upgrades your car to Apple Car Play just by sticking in their USB thumb drive? https://bmw-navigation-update.com/pr...active-by-usb/ |
