2012 335i wrecked! Can it be repaired?

Hey guys,

So I was driving along yesterday and all of a sudden my car jumped and I knew I had hit something very hard. I pulled over and the skirt had been ripped up and a chunk taken out of my tire. Upon further inspection the frame rail had been bent up. I made a police report and there were 2 other reports at the same time for the same type of accident. Apparently pieces of a semi were breaking off sending 60lb chunks of steel hurling at cars but the never found the truck. My question is now that I have a hole in the front fender and the bend in the frame, is this something that can be repaired? With the car being a uni-body construction is this even obtainable?

Thanks.

I'm assuming that's what has happened. The last picture shows what I'm calling the frame rail.

Fixable, frame rails when bent usually in front of the firewall will throw the alignment of body panels off and change the suspension geometry, in your case it's a damaged frame

Like others have said, frame damage usually means your car is totaled. Even if it wasn't, you'd be looking at very steep repair costs. Source: Close friend of mine crashed his 335 into a low barrier, the car in general looked fine, but the frame was bent at a similar location to yours and was enough for insurance to call it a total.

I got a call from the repair shop and the are claiming they can't replace the parts but it will be repaired. Is this something I should fight?

I'd want t know what they are doing to repair it. Car is supposed to be brought back to pre-accident condition. Find out how they intend to do that. A BMW certified shop should not make repairs that are not in line with manufacturer specs. Hopefully you are working with one of those.

That damage won't even come close to totaling your car. The damage is repairable.

Important point to remember here - BMWs, like most modern cars, are built using unibody construction instead of body-on-frame (like trucks and SUVs, which are really just trucks with different bodies). There are front and rear subframes to hold the suspension and powertrain components, but there is no front-to-rear separate frame. If a subframe gets bent, it's replaceable. If the unibody gets bent (top, bottom, or middle), then the car is done for, as it loses its structural integrity.
