To ducks. I laugh out loud every day here, there is a traffic sign saying watch out for them near our house. Never have I seen anything more than an Ikea pillow with feathers near it, and kids run around that road all the time. Yes, let's worry about the ducks, not about the kids who have no understanding of life.

I tend to agree that it is to a certain extent unsafe to stop in the middle of the highway and I would have probably just slowed down to a crawl while honking/yelling to get them to run back from where they came and at the same time looking in my rearview - out of fear of getting myself hit by another car or an 18 wheeler.

That being said, it's a tough call for the trial. Yes, she is responsible for having stopped and causing the accident and there is no doubt about it. If she wouldn't have stopped there, probably the motorcyclists would still be alive. HOWEVER, when driving it is your own responsibility to be safe, not that of the others. And by that I mean to look ahead. Yes I know that at highway speeds it is difficult to estimate whether a car in front is moving or is stopped and it would have been a much easier call if her hazard lights weren't on...but they were. This begs to ask what was that guy doing right before he hit the car? Where was he looking? And why was he speeding with his 16year old daughter?

It's all about assuming your own responsibilites. And that is why I asked this question on the forum. I for one think that our society (Québec) is really messed up on this point. Everytime something bad happens, people always try to find a culprit to blame other than their own stupidity. Another example I can give you is with swimming pools in backyards. There have been a number of children drowning in pools because they wandered off to a neighbour's backyard and fell in the pool, or decided to go for a swim... hence an obligation now to put a locked fence around a pool.
If you can't control your children and keep an eye on them why would I be to blame if your child TRESPASSED onto my property and drowned? If it's a toddler you should be keeping an eye 24/7 no? I know it always sucks for the parents / relatives of the victims but it's their own stupidity that is to blame...

Yes it's stupid to stop in the fast lane... but how CAN YOU NOT SEE A CAR WITH THE HAZARDS ON??? I say he was speeding big time and/or not looking ahead. The accident couldn't have been caused by her fault alone and the proof is that another car avoided her.

A correctional facility has the purpose of "fixing" or "correcting" criminals. What would sending her to prison fix?
