2014 Maps

No update for the 2014 NBT Europe maps (yet), but the the CIC (HDD) Premium 2014 maps are out already. So that will be 3 map updates by BMW in 12 months.

If you were paying stealer rates for upgrades, you would have spent around £700 in 12 months on map updates.

That's exactly why we don't pay dealer prices!

The maps will always be updated. It's just a shame you can't guarantee what maps the new cars come with when they are delivered from new.

Is there a guideline as to how up to date the maps on a new car (63 plate) should be?

Very rarely would you get three updates in a year.

Seeing as BMW do not publish the changes, it makes you wonder why there was the need to bring out 2013-2 only months after 2013-1 was released.

Unfortunately not. You could have a car delivered with an older map update (if a new version was released shortly after your car was manufactured). However, I think you would have a fairly good argument for a free upgrade.

Remember, its not when the car was registered, its when the car was manufactured as to what maps are installed.

How do you find out when the car was manufactured?

Best to expect maps to be at least two years behind the build date of the car to avoid disappointment.

BMW just can't get their act together, which is weird considering their maps are from the same people that update TomTom maps and they are pretty much spot on always.

Virtually all none built in Nav systems have free map updates these days. I think the least BMW could do is offer them while your on your free 3 years of Connected Drive or longer if you renew after that.

They do need to make sure it's easy enough for people to do without going to a dealer though. I don't think burning DVD's or making a USB stick is easy enough for some plus the size of the download is too big again for others.

My solution would be they offer it free as a download with a simple USB stick installer so it'll make it for you if you have one bigger (Or better yet they give delta updates so it just downloads what's changed). Or you pay them £20 a year and twice a year they'll send you the map updates on DVD.

Sounds about right. My car was built in July 2013 and the nav hasn't got a road that was opened in June 2012.

I really think BMW should do this too.

It's not acceptable to buy the BMW navigation system, find out that 2 year old roads are missing and then be expected to pay another £200-£250 for the privilege to get the update.

If I were you I'd check the map version in iDrive when you collect the car, and if it's not the latest insist that they either install it or give you the DVDs/USB drive so you can install it yourself.

Just to let you know, the 2014-1 Next Europe maps (for NBT) have been released now.

Anyone interested in updating them for a reasonable price?

If you don't buy the upgrade from the stealers, what other options do you have if you want the latest maps?

Download the maps from the net (via a torrent normally) and buy the FSC code from someone.

Map FSC Update codes have been broken and there is a tool to generate them. I am trying to negotiate with someone to provide the code/map for £20 if we can get some people involved. More and more people have the generation tool so the price has come down quite a bit.

The update with a stealer is going to be around £250-275.

Edit: I should add I cannot tell you anything about the updated maps. Unfortunately BMW do not publish a change log

My mate who has a Z4 M got one of these £20 map update DVDs from eBay. Trouble is , his sat nav kept crashing, not all the time but now and again. In the end had to go back to bmw and get the proper disc to stop it crashing. Prob worked out a lot more expensive in the end.
Not saying they are all like this but I know he had a lot of trouble.

All BMW cars since 2008 (I think) have had the HDD maps - so you need several DVDs or a memory stick to upload them to your car. In order to activate the maps, you need a FSC activation code. There isn't really anything that can go wrong - you car either likes the updated map or doesn't when uploading it.

Prior BMWs, you could download the maps and burn them to a DVD. They would run off the DVD. The problem with this was the quality of the burn (not every DVD-R is the same) and a lot of people find the BMW DVD player does not recognise their burnt DVD.
