Advice needed with 328i asap!
Hello everyone, first time poster here!
So I have had my 2012 BMW 328i for a year now and everything has been going fine... until Monday. I started the car up and had what as can explain as someone had put a diesel engine in my car overnight. I am aware that there are timing chain issues with this year of the N20 engine which led me to think it could be related to this but after having several conversations with people I am not too sure. The details are when the car starts up there is an unusual noise which will go after a minute or so of the engine running, my initial thought were the chain tensioner as it sounds like slap... the below two videos are what it sounds like. Video 1: Video 2: Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! |

That does not sound right... take it to BMW... prob out of warranty but if it's the chain rattling on a chain guide it won't last long. Sounds like it to me

Wow, definitely sounds off! Take it to a competent indy garage (if out of warranty) and have it checked out ASAP.

Possibly the chain tensioner. Seems like the rattle comes when you back off on throttle. Just a guess.

That sounds like the chain making noise from a non-functioning tensioner. Don't drive it, except to the closest mechanic. Even driving that far is a scary because if a guide breaks, it isn't a good day.
