Ignition Projects coil pack and spark plug DIY

Hey yall!

I wanted to share my latest project with you, and that is full coil pack and spark plug replacement, with the massive upgrade from ignition projects!

**full disclosure as always** I worked with IP directly on this project and wanted to share the work here.

All in all, as most folks on this forum are probably a little more technical than average, the install was really simple. If you are just doing the coil packs, then there are ZERO tools required. I decided since I was at 49k on no doubt original plugs, to go ahead with a plug replacement as well, but that also gives a good refresh for the testing with the IP coil packs.

IP makes some very strong statements with their products, as they should for the cost when compared to stock coil packs. I did quite a bit of research and found examples of folks showing measurable increases in power after the change out of coil packs from stock. I am planning on doing a series of dyno runs on my car hopefully in the next few months, but don't have a recent run prior to this change to compare. What I will likely do is get a baseline run in when I can with these in, and then quickly swap back to stock and run again. That is the only way to get at least semi accurate numbers by comparison, as my only dyno run from months ago was prior to a number of other changes and just wouldn't be accurate.

All in all, really easy install though and from what I read, worth it especially when at higher levels of boost beyond stock.

Thanks yall!

Thank you for doing this! I couldn't find a good n55 video of this process and it cleared things up for me. Appreciate it!

By the way, I believe you may have linked the wrong plugs. There are two BOSCH OEM plugs, the ZR5TPP33 and the ZR5TPP33S. The latter plug is for our engine:

Hey my friend.. thank you for the info, and I could always be wrong, I will be the first one to say that. My understanding though is the ONLY difference with the "S" is the BMW logo stamped on them.. and well, the higher price. They are, I believe and read, the exact same plug.

I gotta say, all butt dyno at this point, but these have honestly made a difference I can feel. The car, with the Active Autowerke Active8 jump box in, feels like it really takes off at 2500 to 2800 RPM, noticeably stronger in a surge.

Since adding these coils, it FEELS (as this is butt dyno of course) that the curve in the lower RPM is now more straight than curved, with response being a little sharper, faster, and (seemingly) less lag dip at clutch engagement.

All butt dyno at this point of course, and I DO have plans to do a series of dyno sessions if I can get it worked out with a local shop.

Call me impressed at this point.

Perhaps a difference with the 435? I don't appear to be missing anything that I am aware of..

It's crank case vent or something. I left it unplugged(forgot to install it back) the engine was loud and clear.

That number 6 plug was a pain in the ass on my E36 as well. also went to ignition projects site and don't see a listing for the coil packs do I just need to call them to order? never mind found them

http://ignitionprojects.com/ip-a122609.html

and

https://store.activeautowerke.com/pr...all-bmw-models

Why did they say not to put anti seize grease on the plugs

I made that mistake on my MB and one of the plugs would not come out hence me having to take the head off the block. PITA I must say.

So GREAT question.. everything I read says DO NOT, so I haven't across multiple BMWs for many years. One explanation I have read is that the compound interferes with actually setting the correct torque on the plugs, and can cause you to over-torque them into the block. There may be more reasons, but I have heard DONT very very strongly across multiple cars and forums.

The best explanation I may have heard in avoiding seizure is to change my plugs more often so I guess if I do not use the anti seize I will follow both your advice not to use the anti seize and my buddies advice about changing plugs more often as well. At perhaps as low as 15k to 25k miles I will do this.

Coils seem nice but pricey. thats my FMIC upgrade money but I am sure those coils are very good. Will go Bosch or Delphi for now. Again fantastic vids. Updated my last post.

Oh hi! Great video, thanks for sharing! You're much bolder than I am, I didn't attempt removing the #6 coil pack/plug with removing all the other stuff in the way.

I have dyno runs posted, including a video on my channel. I dont have a specific run for just the change in coil packs.

hey i have been having misfires on my 2013 bmw 335ix n55 6mt. i bought new bosch coils and have ngk iridium gapped at .018. i am running bm3 e30 stage 2. so many hesitations and misfires the car is not fun to drive. do these ignition coils hold a spark with this higher boost tune situations? i am about to drop 1,000 on coils so i just need some feedback and reassurance thanks.

they do look the same as all the others coils , i really wonder what they would offer extra compared to eldor coils .

if you have those misfires , take oem coils and oem plugs with oem gap .
you'll gonna have less problems in that area . also make sure the coils are seated properly . Ive been through this many times with different mixes of coil brand and plugs . now even at 20 psi , the oem setup works just fine no problems at all . but as always your mileage may vary
