A few years ago I legitimately couldn't afford to be off work and wouldn't get paid for the time off.

I simply replied saying it would be a severe financial burden and was immediately dismissed.

I'm not sure if it is because I was selected two years in a row prior to this third year that they wanted me to come back.

If you are self employed then I would write and plead poverty.

If you are an employee I believe (although I'm no lawyer) your employer has a statutory responsibility to pay you. The employer can write and ask for your service to be deferred if it is a particularly inconvenient time - I once did this for a member of our accounts department at year end.

If you can prove you will struggle financially due to being self employed or that the pay they provide will be too low you can get out of it straight away.

If not most employers will pay you normal pay as it's seen as a good thing to do. I did it, 2 weeks off work, full pay and got to learn a few things

They don't but you can claim from the courts - just £32.47 per day. As mentioned, most employers would pay full but some do not and it sounds like yours doesn't. Usually you can appeal once with exceptional hardship and be dismissed.

The employer is not allowed by law to refuse you time off (although either or both of you can appeal if it causes exceptional difficulty) but he does not have to pay. If he doesn't, you can claim £32.47 loss of earnings.

There’s no way of avoiding it, but you can defer it.

My advice? Just get on with it and make the most of it. I did my stint a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Fascinating to be involved with and I had some very juicy trials to get stuck into.

I agree, I really enjoyed it but I suppose it depends on the case(s) you sit on.

I stand corrected. Every day's a school day.

You can avoid it completely.

I got my first letter back in my training year, and I got my trainer to write me a letter saying I couldn't take time off work, sent that away and I have never been asked back.

Though this was 12 years ago, may have changed now.

You were lucky and sounds like an admin error to be honest!

If you decline two years running for financial reasons they tend to just knock you off the list.

I have never been asked, but would be really interested to do it, having wanted to be a barrister for a while when I was younger. I can see why they wouldn't want people to volunteer themselves though.

Just tell them you are racist / sexist / etc.

They will take you straight off the list without question or repercussion.

I got out of it by telling them I run my own business and simply cant be away from it for any indeterminable length of time, they wrote back and said you are excused.

A friend of mine did it and the case was a Woman prosecuting her husband for anal rape, they passed pictures around of her torn arsehole, you'd think the humiliation of that would be worse than taking one for the team from hubby, but each to their own.

I really wouldn’t fancy this at all, you could have to sit on some horrific stuff. Remember this case of Becky Watts where she was cut into pieces by her step brother……

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-34790804

a member of the jury who was a senior NHS professional suffered long lasting trauma as a result of sitting on the jury. Apparently you don’t get any help or counselling if you get affected by the trial. Not pleasant if you are of a nervous disposition.

Thought LobB had been cured by The Priory of his farm yard antics.
