Not true. While I've coded some things on my car myself, the ASS recoding was done by BMW at the VPC. I can turn it off and turn it on at will, even while the car is running.

If ASS is on and the engine is stopped, turning it off starts the engine. If ASS was off and the car is in motion, turning it on will most likely cause the engine to stop at the next full stop (depending on the normal ASS variables, like temperature, steering angle, position of the gear selector for AT).

I may have to come to see you for additional coding when BMW gets mine together again!! Like to get a few other things turned on/off... like holding the lock button on the key to close windows and close mirrors, and show exact readings on TPM for example.

Sure...you bet. Though I'm no coding expert, I found it pretty easy to follow the cheat sheet.

Now, I don't know how I lived without mirror-folding from the fob/CA, real-time TPM, unlocking on engine off, no disclaimer and the best hidden feature of all: weather band.

It just makes me shake my head that BMW has all these killer features in the car and hides them -- not just from owners, but from the dealers as well.

I've been trying to get the BMWCCA chapter in Boston interested in holding coding events -- they're ignoring me. And I think they are missing out on building a bunch of new interest among members. Some of these guys, despite what they say, are not that welcoming to guys like me for whom the best wrench is an Ethernet cable.

Update

Ok, so the final update, looks like they got the new software and it's all good to go. BMW was giving me $500 for the trouble, but the Service Mgr remembered me asking about a price on the M Performance Exhaust.... well, he told me they are giving it to me, installed, for FREE because of the inconvenience!! I also purchased the Black grills and they will install those for me too. WOW!

So, 6 days without the car, but a heck of nice compensation on the part of my dealer and BMW!
