Tires are the ONLY factor. No summer performance tires - lower limit. It's pretty simple.

I'm betting he HAS the standard all-seasons. It's far less likely to come across an xDrive with summer tires than a RWD.

Driving at the speed limiter does not define the BMW driving experience for 99% of BMW owners above the age of 18.

I'm assuming you mean you have a "Sport Line" car. It does not come standard with "sport tires" (summer tires). The summer tires are optional. You can't assume a Sport Line has the summer tires.

+1

Besides, there are Kias that will reach 150MPH. So what?

No. He could just do a few laps around the sun at 150 mph and he can go back in time and fix his car.

I see that you live in Miami and have a Sport line. Did your Governor kick in at 130mph? I also have a Sport line 335i and I have yet to hit the limit and my fastest so far is 160MPH and I backed off but car wanted to go more.

Im not so sure about that. I dont know why summer tires play such a huge role with everyone but really its the speed rating of the tire. Lower rating tire lower rating speed thats pretty much it.

235/35 R19 91Y – What Do These Numbers Mean?
We are all pretty familiar with tire sizes, but few understand what those numbers represent, and also what the all that other writing on the sidewalls of your tires means and why it’s important.

Tire Sizes Explained: 235/35 R19 91Y
235 is the tire’s section width (measured at its widest point in MM)
35 is the aspect ratio (the tire’s height is 35% of its section width)
R stands for radial tire. If the R is not present the tire is probably a bias ply tire.
19 is the wheel diameter in inches
91 is the tire’s load rating that it can safely carry – in this case 1356 pounds per tire.
Y is the tire’s speed rating. A “Y” speed rating is good for 186+mph or 300+kph.

My car has the Pirelli Cinturato P7 all season 225/45/R18 91Y. 91y is the key factor its rated to 186mph. And my car is not limited to 130. If you dont believe me here ya go, sorry for the crappy pic but its at 136mph.

Governing rules on whether or not you get option 840 (increased top speed limiter)
Translations to codes in parenthesis

General rules
ZMM (M Sport Line) includes 840
ZSL (Sport Line) includes 840
Other lines do not

Additional rules that modify general rules
ZAS cannot be ordered with 840 (ZAS is All season tires, if you spec ZAS instead of ZPT (performance summer tires) on your sport line or m sport - no 840)
ZLL and 2A4 will add 840 to the order (Luxury line spec'd with 19" light alloy wheels Double-spoke style 401 with mixed tires gets 840)
ZML and 2A4 will add 840 to the order (Modern line spec'd with 19" light alloy wheels Double-spoke style 401 with mixed tires gets 840)
ZMM and 2PP will delete 840 from the order (M sport with 18" style 400M wheels that are "not mixed" - i.e. same size front and rear - get no love)
ZPT requires ordering 840 (if you get summer performance tires, you get 840)
ZSL and ZAS will delete 840 from the order (Sport line with all season tires, no 840)

This is from the 2013 ordering guide
http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=691810

Additional rule not stated here that was enforced by the computer at time of order (i.e. I ran into this ordering mine), if you go with the 2A5 wheels (18" not mixed) on the sport line it will require ZAS (all season) tires and hence preclude you from getting 840

Clear as mud?

Yeh I doubt that because HUD is very very difficult to see anywhere in car other than drivers seat.

I will say 130 is nothing for this car. It gets there effortless and is very stable. There is another thread on this forum and a few ppl have gone over 155 and some do say they get fuel cut at 155 and others are cruisers.

130 MPH has become trivial for modern vehicles. I would be concerned if a modern sedan of average power was unable to easily achieve 130, astonished if was unstable when it did.

Aerodynamicists long ago solved the floaty-at-100 MPH feeling common decades ago. Unless speed limited, all modern sedans of over 200 hp will easily and happily cruise at 130 MPH. Minivans and SUVs are stable at 100+ MPH. It's pretty amazing.

In today's automotive world, top speed is unimpressive until 300+ KPH. Besides, any driver can accomplish high speeds as long as they have a foot to depress the throttle.

No, a friend and I tried to video my runs a while back on a phone but the vidoes were way to crappy and shaky. He just extended his hand above the steering wheel and snapped a photo.

Oh I totally agree with what youre saying, I mentioned the ZTP and option 840 earlier. Im just saying there is a tire speed rating as well. And with my post above with the photo attached, I cant elaborate on why or whats going on lol all I know is Ive had my car well over 130 mph 3 times, fastest ever was 136. So the only explanation I have at this point then if the car is limited to 130 mph the speedo is 6 mph off. Do I think thats the case no, but it is what it is. It saw 136 and no power cut off and I run all season tires. Only mod to my car is the black kidney grills, tint, and black gloss 335i badges

I know the tires are rated for those speeds. I was refering to BMW's determination of who get's what.

I agree 100% that the cars are certainly capable and stable. They have been for decades (BMW anyway).

The primary concern is the seat to controls interface. Things happen pretty quickly at these speeds. Anyone without a solid understanding of the dynamic physics of car control can end up over their head in a real hurry.

So what is the explanation for my car being able to surpass the 130 regulated barrier? Because that sure as hell has me confused. My car is stock. ITs been to the dealership 2 times for reflashing, but I dont see them just raising the speed limiter.

Easy. The indicated speed is off. Right about 5% error at the very top of the range.

Im gonna have to retest this with a proper setup and a better camera mounted. Ill see if I can do 140. Then the 5% speedo off theory doesnt hold water. Im thinking of using my Garmin nuvi to test with satellite thats pretty accurate.

Oh and If I get the PPK, does this bump up the speed limiter to 155mph even if I dont have summer tires? My guess is yes because the tires are rated to 186 mph.

I have those same tires lol I really think they messed up my limiter, Im calling tomorrow. And believe it or not there are safe places in CT to hit those speeds. Whether I get a ticket or not is my own problem, however I would never endanger someones life. Never have I gone fast with other people around me

It was pretty open when I did it only one car on the whole desolate stretch. So what do you mean they messed up your speedo? I hit 136mph but I also let off, now if you do follow the supposed within 5% 136-5% is 129.2 so this theory would be correct.

If I get to 140 mph, then 140-5% is 133, Im not buying that whole 5% off thing. THats ridiculous in the 1st place that its off by that much. 7mph really BMW really?/?

if you have all season tires, your speed limiter is set at 130. on the E90 you also would not get the secondary oil cooler.
