HK - Speaker Rattle?
Hi all,
I got my 340i less than 2 months ago - has the HK speaker package. Really enjoy the sound quality, left it on default settings (with Logic7 surround on). This morning I noticed at very high volumes (70%+) and songs with high frequencies, I get what sounds like disotortion in one of the right rear door speakers and right rear speaker (and somewhat in the right front door speakers). It almost sounds like a blown speaker but only at very high volumes and very high frequencies. I tried feeling for any looseness in trim or in the speaker cover, but everything felt solid. I was able to replicate with same songs at higher volumes. My question: is this normal or to be expected with high frequencies at high volumes with this car? Is this something others have experienced? Thanks. |

If you feel like it's a bad speaker or something is loose inside the door take it to the dealer.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try the door lock, but the sound is actually more pronounced from the right rear speaker behind rear right passenger headrest.
I guess my question is: is this normal for the HK to start distorting at that volume level and am I being too picky? |

I have the HK system as well and with a particular artist, the left rear speaker will buzz at certain low frequencies. I'll have it looked at when I have my first service; it's not noticeable with most of my other songs, so not in a hurry to drive all the way to just have the dealer check it.

Rear right speaker buzzes occasionally with certain (very few) songs I have tried all the recommended EQ settings, and nothing has worked to remedy it.

I have this with my Hifi and Bimmertech. If I crank one particular song (Kimbra - 2 Way Street) sounds like the speaker (left front passenger) is ripped. If I turn it down a bit or have other songs at the same volume, it doesn't.
I'm not going to bother as I'll eventually upgrade the speakers. I'll just not crank it so much from now on for that song. |

The issue is a replicable one with the HK system. Mine does it at 75% volume on a select few tracks, normally folk or vocal jazz stuff. I get a buzz/rattle in when certain higher frequencies hit. Had BMW replace the center channel and two tweeters before they played my demo tracks in another identically equipped 3-series and replicated the awful sound. Their advice? Don't listen to those tracks that loud. My response? Don't allow the dial on the "premium" stereo to go all the way to eleven if it can't actually handle going all the way to eleven without distortion.

Thank you very much for the input! It sounds like it's a common issue. I had requested a service appointment for tomorrow just because I had some free time, but I'll cancel and save this for my first oil change.
Thanks again for the input. Will update in a few months at first service. |

sorry to necro this 7 year old thread:
I'm having the same issue, and it's with 200hz frequencies in my GC; low frequency kicks from music and listening to podcasts. i removed the speaker covers/panels in the rear seats (the ones that are next to the rear passenger headrests) and the buzzing went away. My speakers seem to be fine. I threw another piece of foam and reseated the grills with more tension, but when i slapped it all back together, the buzzing has lessen, but it's still there. The problem seems to be with the panels that lock in around the speakers. Only solution I can think of is sticking on some Gorilla tape where the panels meet each other. Anyone here ever find a solution to this? |

for anyone who bumps into this that wants a solution:
it's the panels and metal clips that hold the panels. Adding a small, wadded piece of black tape in between the offending panels and using the equalizer to move the bias 2 clicks forward has gotten rid of ALL my buzzing. With bass and treble turned max and listening to podcasts (lots of 200hz low frequency tones), the buzzing is gone. |

Line the door cards with this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BLSP8JV...dDbGljaz10cnVl
It will reduce road noise too. |
