Oil leak possibly from rear crankshaft seal

Hi guys,

I purchased a 435i n55 2 weeks ago yesterday I found out theirs a very small leak from the rear crankshaft seal. Now to replace it apparently gearbox and other bits need to come out and seems like a big job? Anyone else’s had this issue and what did you do? I got the car recently and I don’t want to spend no more on it right now how serious is this leak? Would I be able to drive for a while like this?

As long as there's enough oil in the sump it wont do any harm

However youll need to make sure it really is the rear seal, it could be valve cover gasket, leaky turbo oil lines or any number of things (I can't visualise where that photo is taken)

Needs to go on a ramp, thoroughly cleaned with brake cleaner or similar so it's dry and then run the engine until the source is apparent

It should be the seal as my mechanic that looks after my cars had a look and said it’s the rear crankshaft seal.

We cleaned it up yesterday and today I can’t see no oil also my engine oil level is the same as 2 weeks ago

Leave it be then and let it develop....

If it's a tiny amount it's fine; hot oil goes a LONG way!

Forget about it for now... Just keep your eye on any obvious signs of oil leaks, if/when you see them

Unless you have some sort of BMW warranty I wouldn't worry until it becomes a big more significant. Rear main seal is a bit of a job!

It's not serious by looks of the pics... just keep an eye on your oil level

forget about it then. Just check your oil routinely but I wouldn't worry. You will know if it gets worse if you have a driveway because there will be a little pool under it or your tarmac will be discoloured.
