"Do you need anything more than a BMW 320d?"

Saw this post today and thought I'd share. I've never driven a diesel, however, I know their main forte is fuel economy and torque. But I guess you lose the higher revving nature of gasoline engines.

Well you could always go for the 330d or the 335d (quickest 3 series).

Why have 4 cyclinders when 6 are so much better.

Smoother ride, less tractor like engine noise, more power, 50 mpg easily achievable.

Why settle for 2nd best?

To answer the question, I'd personally need a bit more than a 320d.

Drove one, was not impressed: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=878116

I totally understand what he was saying as the 320d is a good car but the 330d is fantastic!

Need.. No. Even Nissan micra will handle commutes just fine.

Want. absolutely. 5lb /hp seems like a nice target to shoot for in a daily driver

For the 2016 LCI, BMW's press release states the 335d xDrive does 0-62 in 4.8 seconds and the 340i xDrive does it in 4.9 sec.

Well, you can't deny that it's slow and to a lot of people, that won't cut it.

At around 7.x secs to freeway speeds..agree with this ^. I like to merge quick..not struggle and 'fit/squeeze' my way in. Power is happiness

Yep and uses half the fuel to do it

Not only is the 335d a sub 5 seconds car but it also can get 55mpg.

Obviously not at same time

I had the 328d wagon for a week as a loaner, and totally agreed its slow but oddly I liked it a lot.

I found it to be really unpretentious. No sports design elements, no attempted sports noise or sports feel.. just solid feeling, high MPG cruising and general commuting competence that just gets out of your way and does an excellent job at being a commuting appliance.

My gut feeling is that I'd want a 328d with luxury line and lots of creature comforts so I don't get confused that it is a "sporty" car with the M steering wheel or sportier suspension feeling of the adaptive dampers

EDIT: what are the 1/4 trap speeds of the 335d and 335i ? and 0-100mph? 0-60mph is such a limited metric

14.2 @100 for the '09 335D. Can't find anything newer. 335i is like 13.1 @106mph I think.....

The US 335d was the European 330d, just like the 328d here is the 320d in the rest of the world.

The 335d I believe takes it there, also not many places you can do 100mph legally.

So real world use, a 335d is the quickest off the line.

Agreed it misses out on that petrol sound track.

i guess a 335i driver needs to remember they are driving the 2nd best 3 series

Btw are uk mpg different? I could not get a 328d to do better than 45mpg on the highway. How is the 335d getting 55 mpg

That depends. The 335d is X-Drive and 8AT only. Too bad if you prefer RWD and 6MT, which makes the 335i the best 3-series. Especially in wagon format.

There's the Alpina D3 BITURBO Touring, which only "lacks" the 6MT

An imperial (UK) gallon is a little over 4.5 liters or about 154 US fl oz. A US gallon is a little under 3.8 liters or 128 fl oz.

Hope that helps
