I have a CIC equipped 335, and would love to receive updates. Every time I see that there are new maps and updates for NBT, it just makes me sad that my system was out of date the following model year.
But your maps ARE updatable. Sure it cost 250 from BMW.. Vendors on here can get the code for cheaper tho.

Just navi software however.

Afraid you're almost two generations behind. NBT was a big change over CIC, now we'll have NBT (Evo?) with 4G LTE and updating maps, then whatever the following NBT system is in with the G11 including touch-screen, etc.

The key to the OTA updates seems to be the 4G LTE SIM. Per the press releases, the MY2015 2-series cabrio is the first car to support such technology. Standard NBT only has a 3G SIM, with CIC of course being 2G SIM.

You can already see the OTA updates verbiage when you do a build-your-own on the BMW website for the F23, and select the Navigation option. This verbiage is not currently found on any other car, on the BMWUSA.com site.

Give it time. They're putting cameras on all their cars; how long before those cameras will be able to identify speed cameras and relay that position back to home base?

The key to the OTA updates seems to be the 4G LTE SIM. Per the http://telematicsnews.info/2014/10/07/paris-bmw-adds-4g-lte-and-ota-map-updates-to-connecteddrive_0577/]press releases[/url], the MY2015 2-series cabrio is the first car to support such technology. Negatory. The part you're quoting comes from the site. The official BMW press release states it's available via ConnectedDrive. I think the news agency thought the 4g LTE and map updates were *both* starting availability on the f23 but it's only the LTE. Further underscoring this is that there's no reason such a system wouldn't be available to current ConnectedDrive systems. It might not be on official site literature yet because it's just been announced. Give them some time to retrograde the site's content.

Dang.

I just ordered a new F11 at the weekend for delivery in a couple of months, I really hope that I don't miss out on this by a couple of months...

I assume NBT evo will come in early summer (if at all given where it is in it's life cycle) for the F10/F11.

Annoying the release doesn't say when this will be supported.

Yes, available via ConnectedDrive, but nowhere does it state all models that use any ConnectedDrive platform will support the upgrade. The MY2015 Z4 and X1 are both available with ConnectedDrive, using the 7-year old CIC platform, that's old as dirt. You think those cars will get the OTA updates?

It is pretty explicit, and matches up directly to what BMWUSA has posted to their site:
"The built-in SIM card in BMW models will now support the 4G wireless standard (Long Term Evolution – LTE), which provides significantly improved network coverage and data transfer speeds. "

Sure there's a reason: it seems very likely that the 2G/3G SIM cards can't support the throughput requirements necessary for OTA updates. And likely there's minor updates to the hardware inside the NBT, as well. Actually, every year since NBT has been introduced, there have been hardware updates.

My CIC 328i has the latest 2015 maps and I updated myself for $50 purchasing the FSC code and downloading the maps myself. Very easy to do. CIC maps usually come out around the same time, maybe a few weeks to months later, then NBT maps.

Then the next step should be to offer free map updates that you can download much like Garmin or any of the other GPS manufacturers do for lifetime free with the purchase of a $100 GPS! The $$$ that we pay for these NAV Systems should include FREE UPDATES!!!

All the maps and FSC codes are available free on the internet via Torrents (Internet free not BMW free). The FSC codes are easily generated once you obtain your 1B/DE file from your car. There are utilities that generate the FSC code from those files, but you must have an ENET cable for E-Sys to pull those files. Torrents and Instructions are out there, just search google.

Is this FREE OTA update likely to be on my F30 for Australia which goes into production this week? My Dealer seems to know nothing about it!

A faster connection surely will help but I really don't see how THAT amount of data could just be dropped OTA to every car... I suppose they will adopt a more smartphone like system where all is up in the cloud... time will tell...

They'll probably push delta updates instead of a complete map replacement like they do with the current systems.

But it doesn't make much business sense to make this available on anything older than the newest platform for a number of reasons. Sure it's *technically* possible, tons of stuff is from a technical standpoint.

You'd have to develop the software to allow OTA updates for the CIC and NBT systems. CIC is already at end of development and NBT only has a couple more years before they move on.

Then you'd have to get that software update pushed out to vehicles. That costs a lot of money in dealership tech time and then high probability of failed modules, so replacements for those, etc. That alone would cost millions of dollars for vehicles that are already bought and BMW isn't making money from.

The list goes on, but basically it doesn't make financial sense for a company to expend that kind of money and time to basically give something out for free. It does make sense to develop it for the newest platforms and entice you to buy a new vehicle with all the new features.

Have you even seen BMW Online free in the CIC as it is currently with the NBT? Both Nav systems are capable of BMW Online, and both can be enabled remotely... but one costs $199 a year and the other is included with the Nav.

I don't think that this OTA map update is a matter of technicalities with past Nav systems. I do think that no Nav system other than the NBT Evo will offer the OTA just because BMW simply do not offer anything for free as a retrofit for past generations. Nothing. And $250 for a map update per car is kind of difficult to pass when you multiply that by tens of thousands of old cars.

In the UK, the first car to get this will be the F20/21 LCI 1-Series.
The first customer deliveries are expected during the last week of March.

I'd be very surprised if BMW rolled this out to existing owners, as they want a way to differentiate the new models. There has been some talk of providing the ability to buy map updates in the Connected Drive App Store, but this would still require physical media to apply the update. I'm guessing the App Store bit would just provide online authorisation of the maps.

I can see BMW enabling online checking of map licenses in the future, meaning that user/third party generated FSC codes might be recognised and disabled. Interesting times ahead, I think.

I do not see that. Big brother! How would they check on line? Can you see the queue at the dealerships saying fix this or I go elsewhere?

If they did do this, all you have to do is drive round the corner from the garage and put the latest USB II drive in the USB port with the latest map on it and enter the FSC code you have made a note of and 40 minutes later you are back to where you started from.

BMW will be on a loser and not only that they will be the laughing stock in the trade.

+1. You are right. Thanks for finding the answers. For F30, OTA updates will only be available MY2016 onwards. Only sedan, sport wagon get it. Interestingly, MY2016 F34 (gran turismo) will not be getting them!

Here's the official verbiage:
