Engine "whine"
I have 4000 miles on the car, and recently I just started noticing a low tone "whine" from the engine at low speeds/rpms. I don't know if it's always been there and I've never noticed it, or if it's new. It seems to fluctuate with the engine speed, but lags behind a second. Don't really hear it at fast speeds, but when in park I can barely hear it sometimes, and at low speeds I can hear it over the engine. I did some searches, and some say it is normal, some say it isn't. Anyone else notice this?

Any mods on the car or is it stock?

ok ill try to do that. it sounds more like a "growl" than a high pitch whine like a turbo makes. I really only here it at idle or very low speeds. once I get going I cant even hear it.

I think I might have a similar noise, but only when the A/C is running. Try turning the A/C off and see if it goes away.
I took into the dealer and they said what I was hearing was normal. Hope that helps. |

yeah turned off the A/C, still there. It seems a little quieter when the car is warm. Took it to the dealer yesterday, he didn't have time to look at it, but said he has noticed the same sound on other bimmers. I guess it is more like a "buzzing" sound than a whining. Just because its lower frequency. When you rev up the engine, it seems to drown it out.

I believe the A/C sound is different from OP's sound. I too, observe a different whine when the A/C compressor is on, but only when RPMs are decreasing. This sound goes away when the A/C is turned off.
