Wonder what the average mph is over those motorway miles? That will have a bearing on what mpg will be.

Similar to ours and ours is probably the same proportion motorway, albeit M25 and M4 rush hours, so quite slow.

After 2.5 weeks of ownership and 700 miles, I know my 335d can average as high as 54mpg (160 mile drive back from dealer), 36mpg (commute trips where the engine doesn't get to temperature) and less than 30mpg when I'm using most of the 300+hp. No surprises for me.

As I think that is perfectly acceptable (given the available performance I actually think it is great), should I stop worrying about 'brim to brim' figures and just enjoy my car?

Yes! Now you can do about it really, without driving your car in a way that means you may as well have bought a 318d!

I should pass the 1200 miles run-in distance in about 2 weeks.

Average MPH is in the 50's.

The difference I get running at 81 on the speedo (77 on gps) and running at 76 on the speedo (70 on the gps) is around 4mpg.

Oddly though the difference between running at 81 and running at 100 is only 0.3mpg.

Obvious gearing and mapping advantages to driving at German speeds.

Yus they are. Diesel comes from my own pump so I'm a bit anal about recording it.

Wind et al will play a role but yes. One run where I was late for the channel tunnel and one run at ordinary speeds. Same time of day, same traffic load, same ish weather. Distance covered being 280miles.

81 run gave 40.4mpg.

100 gave 40.1mpg.

The same run at 75 gives 44.7mpg.

In my limited ownership of my new 335d, your first and last figures are slightly lower than I'm experiencing, but your 100mph figure is astonishingly good. Genuine question, is there a chance you had a 15 to 20mph tail wind?

The route is west to east, so if anything I'd have a head wind. Both days were reasonably still though.

I'll stick with 'astonishingly good' then!

I bet there aren't many family saloon size cars that will touch 40mpg at 100mph. High gearing helps - just 2200rpm at 100mph in 8th.

That's the thinking I had too. I imagine while off boost between 2krpm and 2.5krpm it runs fairly lean to promote MPG at German unrestricted and 140kph limits.

If I get pulled at a ton, I'll let them know 'I'm saving the planet'.

Something is not stacking up with your high speed figures. We all know the physics of speed and the substantial additional HP required to drive faster, 80 - 100mph.

Wonder what you'd be seeing in controlled conditions? What you indicate would be a very weird BSFC map, assuming both speeds were in 8th gear.

There are not many controlled tests which go to, or above 100mph. A graph which I have seen for the M57 engine in a 535d shows a linear mph vs. mpg drop off from 50 to 110mph, is only then very slowly curves to 155mph.

I can't see the current engine being much different... how did you get the average figures? OBC?

I'm going to Switzerland this week diverting my route through Germany ( but only about 100 miles) and hopefully I can get my 1200 miles mark before so I will give it a kickdown and can see the "REAL" mpg

Currently i am averaging 41.2MPG. This is based over 320 miles of driving. The main drive is motorway but 35% has been on 30mph roads. I have also had a few blasts in the car.

Today driving into work on Motorway and normal roads i did just under 49mpg.
NOW this included driving through about 9 miles of 50mph limits too and about 30% 30mph roads too.

I cannot see a 335D doing 50mpg over a full tank but then again I haven't driven like a granny for a full tank either!

Overall this impressed with the cars fuel consumption! 41mpg for a car thats only done 700 miles isnt bad?!?!?

486 miles out of tank for a 300bhp+ car is really impressive. Were you taking it easy or just driving normally for that tank?
