Front edge of the F30 hood removed by Photoshop
I really want to go with the white exterior but the hood's front edge line being so noticeable (and annoying to look at, personally) makes me think if I should go with a darker color (ie. mineral grey or black) instead.
I read somewhere that the hood is cut where it is as some sort of safety measure for pedestrians. I guess that made me a little less annoyed, knowing that BMW isn't the one to blame. Nonetheless I wanted to see what it would look like without the noticeable black line running between the headlights. Especially on white, I think it makes a world of difference so I just wanted to share it with everyone. What do you think? |

by that logic, we should erase all body panel gap lines... ...
personally, i dont pay too much attention to that... the F30 esthetic isvery good compared to the E90.

i think it looks better without but i don't feel its that big of an issue. i think we tend to stress about things in photos but once we see the car in real life its not that significant.

@DrivenbyE30. I said 'one of the reasons', not the mainreason.
I think so.... |

when i said: "by that logic" i was referring to the OP's raising the issue... i understand the concern of you all, for a cleaner hood, bmw should have put the line located right between the two kidney beans that would have been a better excution. we are cool, i still can't wait for my very dark (almost black) blue F30, especially since my sister just traded her E46 for a 2011 E90 328i today, making me jealous that i am still driving my old E36 car.

Totally agree with you there. And that's exactly why I'm planning on getting one.
It's just that, to me personally, that particular hood line cuts off the flowing 'front to back' feel of the design. Also, it's something they can totally design differently. Unlike the door sills, for example. Like some of those that responded above, I really considered going for 'mineral grey' to lessen the effect. But I've read on this blog that they may come out with 'mineral white' sometime in the near future.. that only made things more complicated |

I don't like it. I don't necessarily buy the pedestrian law excuse. Audi's new front end, just released this year, doesn't have the hood line. Some say Audi can get a way with it because of their high hood level. But I don't buy that excuse either because.....Volkswagen's Jetta which has a very low hood doesn't have the hood line. Plus, Volkswagen's 2012 Beetle, just released this year, doesn't have a hood line, and that hood design is as about as low as they come. Its metal hood probably goes as low as your knee caps. It's not high at all. Talk about metal to full body contact.
The hood line is there probably because BMW designers think it's cool and didn't want to be left out of the whole retro movement. Unfortunately they picked the one of the absolute worst design features to come out of the 1960's. They didn't even bother giving the hood line an arc or curve to blend with the rest of the car. Instead, they used a perfectly straight ruler to draw it and made it look like it doesn't belong there. It looks like an afterthought, IMO. There are better hood lines out there. This just isn't one of them. |

Just a quick comment, that HOOD LINE looks like SHIT, it should have seamless symmetry. That line is completely out of place, if you compare the pics above all the ones with out the line looks MUCH BETTER... Flaw in design!

Hood line looks fine to me...but i still prefer a modded E90 over the F30 body...
I think if you remove the hood line it would look looks like a Z4 with 4 doors
