Crazy how long you guys wait for oil change interval especially with all the horror stories on the N 20/26 engines. Right now I'm under warranty and I take my car in for an oil change every 4.5k miles. And I plan on doing an oil change every 4K miles after I'm out of warranty in about a month.

Update, after I'd say 1000miles or so. Looks really fully and watery, not sure if this is normal. Let me know you opinion, my car isn't driving frequently and does many short trips.

Wow. That looks incredibly orange!
I thought mine looked odd but yours is even less oil looking? And the volume of liquid caught after only a thousand miles does not seem right either... I have the N26. Basically same as N20. Which do you have? |

I never had a problem with it freezing or even aware this was possible BUT my last car was NA and my can caught a much more "oil like" substance and less watery than my N26. That could definitely play a factor. Not a worry for me where I live now but still interested to hear others opinions on this as well... anyone? |

I hoping its because of the short trip and not reaching operating temp frequently. Car runs great otherwise. I will be doing a oil change next weekend and drain the OCC again and see the result from there on.
Ps. Freezing oil catch can shouldnt be too much of an issue. Oil doesnt freeze to start of with, and the water would freeze inside the can but would not affect air flow unless your can gets super full like mine LOL. So dont worry about a heated can IMO |

So, I bought the BMS oil catch can and attempted install. What should have been an easy 30 min job for a shade tree mechanic turned into a debacle. I have a 2012 328i. First problem I ran into was the vent hose you disconnect to insert a reducer and attach to the can was brittle so it snapped. One hour drive and $62 later. While removing the aforementioned vent hose from its lower attachment point to the larger hose that attached to the airbox...one of the retaining clip points brokeon the large hose. I finally got everything back together and the can installed it was running rough and throwing a P107 code (I think)...it was the one indicating a an air leak in the intake system. Fortunately I just bought this thing as a CPO about 1.5 weeks ago and already have a 7:30 Monday drop off for them to fix the brakes. So, I removed the can...put it all back together and will have them investigate the code and discover the the other hose with the broken clip point that needs replacing. The question is...once I get it back will I dare to attempt install again?
This was just a cautionary tale to others consider some issues they could run into on a simple mod....especially if your car is a bit older. |

Picking the car up today. As I mentioned in my post, the CVV hose broke (the one you disconnect from the front top of the engine) and the large hose that connects to the MAF/Airbox. On the large hose the connectors that hold the CVV hose in place snapped as I was trying to remove it. That was self inflicted as I need to be more gentle working on this thing, I’m used to building 4Runners. They did replace the large hose under CPO.

Nope. I change my oil every 5k religiously and the oil loss is insignificant and within spec of the digital oil level meter. I suppose if you ran 10k intervals without emptying the can... you may risk overflowing / lowering the amount of oil in the crankcase to get an low oil warning.

Does anyone have oil forced out of the catch can's threads and running down the side of the can?
Also, the can is dry/empty and only smells of oil. I'm wondering if the 50 micron filter is too restrictive. |
